Trolled down so I was probably not at Palmie until just after 7am.
Mermaid had about 60 boats on it as I passed. Didn't get a touch on the trolled rigs on the way down in any case so I should have obviously just bolted down there.
I found a spot and anchored up and floated out a pillie, there was a bit of a run so I added a bit of weight and it wasn't too long before I latched onto a decent fish...
We live and learn don't we, at least I do.... I had locked onto a decent Spanish on my single hook with wire. Got it to the boat 3x... but being by myself I realized that I had a bit of a problem :( The braid was tied off to a 3M section of 40lb Jinkai to give it a bit of stretch and the wire was connected to this leader. This meant that I would wind the fish in and still have about 3.5M left to the fish. Everytime I went to put the rod in one hand to grab the leader with the other, the Spanish would obviously go for a run.. I must have looked a sight! When I finally thought the fish was tired enough to be able to put the rod to one side he finally did a roll close to the prop and either caught the prop with the line or just bit through the wire but in any case I lost him. :'( That would have been my first Spaniard....
By this time I added a bit more weight a and got a good run out of a Cobia, This time I did not do the same mistake and the Cobia was gaffed close to the boat (that would have to be obvious right duuhhhh) It might not be a big Cobia by the big boys standard but it will feed a couple of families tonight (about 90cm)
After this my last solid hookup was to something bigger than me. After 30minutes of all the closest boats checking me out with my bent rod and short bursts of ratchet I finally lost it without getting a sight of it! frustrated I was!!!!!! Having thought about it it must have been a large stingray and thus I'm not so cranky about loosing it anymore.
A bit lumpy going back but I will be back for the Spanish! ;D
