It seems I'm left to write about our little journey. My comrades in arms must have broken fingers and are obviously unable to type :-/ .

Well as the title suggested we (Mackmauler, Lucky Phil and I) were planning on a Banks trip given the forecast of good weather and the proximity to the full moon. Sanpper and pearlies were the target species.

Rob and I haven't fished out that way much - and Phil is not that much of a regular himself but he had a mark or two for north of the Banks given to him by and old time fisherman. We were banking on the banks providing us with a feed.

Left Brissy at Midnight Friday night and left Mooloolaba at around 1:30am. I was meant to be whale watcher but it was bloody freezing and my eyes were watering too much so I tried to sleep up the front - should have joined Rob down the back. Spoke to every man and his dog on the way out with the Ausfish boys in full cry.

We found out target area around 3:00am finding nice rises and structure in the 70m depth with plateaus up to 50-55m. The sounder showed fish holding in good numbers so a drift was in order to work out what was feeding and which way the wind/current would take us.

The first drop yielded nothing as Phil was - how should I put it - becoming gastronomically challenged as a result of becoming a bit disoriented in the pitch black conditions. With no references - sun or moon - Phil was finding the lights of the cabin a bit much and I thought he just kept looking over the side for bearings - he was however testing his famous and now patented "silent spew".

After Phil and then Rob taking turns at doing loop the loops trying to get back to the mark - I had us anchored on some good looking shows at about 4:00. First drop resulted in bites and hook-ups with Rosy Jobfish coming to the surface. They were steady for a good 45mins and only broken by bloody great tea leaf trevally that were going 5kgs.

Before dawn Phil landed the first snapper and he continued to set the pace while Rob and I caught "the others". Phil soon had the boat highlight with a nice 6.5kg Nobby and Rob followed up with a 7kg Spangled. As the sun came up I put out the floater and got immediate success with 3 nice snapper - one a pigeon pair of Phil's. The Rosies kept coming - as did the snapper, trevs and then a couple of parrot. One of Rob's parrot had to be rescued from the mouth of a giant cod. Rob called a good fish then about 10m from the bottom his good fish became a better fish. A tussel of strength and mind eventuated in a 2-3kg parrot hitting the decks after being stunned and descaled by
Mr Cod.

As the morning progressed the bust offs were numerous with many big fish out doing us. At about 8:30 the yellow tail kings arrived and it was impossible to get a bait through the 5-7kg fish. It didn't matter if it was the surface or the bottom - every drop resulted in a kingy. We kept a couple for the esky but It got that bad we had to move. Fishing this good was becoming boring ;D

We tried a couple of drifts but nothing of any note. A short trip over to see Spiro and then we were home on a relatively calm sea and a glorious day.

It took Phil and I nearly 2 hours to fillet and clean all the fish at his place and that was after Rob had already taken "his" catch home. Our entire catch was notable for the absence of pearlies - only 1 legal but then again we didn't really move around and chase them. The abundance of other species made up for the lack of the pearlie ones.

Of course being the Wallies that we were. I forgot my camera - as did Rob. Phil brought his but left the memory card at home ;D. As a result the fish don't look as good as coming straight out of the water.

No bag limits were breached in the making of this story ;D ;D ;D

Phil with a couple of eskies full.

You can't see the kingies or the two big trevally we kept here because they were covered by too many other fish in the big eskie ;D

How good are the barwons to fish from, that is a exelant feed of fish ::),
catching fish of that quaility and amount makes it hard to stay away from the banks
the best part of all is the amount of grounds you can fish up there is endless.
really enjoyed the write up and the photos ( has me planning my next barwons trip now, thanks for the insentive)

great catch fellas, got to love the banks. What sort of rigs and baits were you getting them on?

bugman

Craigie, CamH,

Would you believe I was able to get to the bottom pretty much directly under the boat with an unweighted whole pillie. There was no current and the snapper loved the floating pillie. It was a shame the kingies turned up because I could get the pillie passed them to get to the snapper.

It's a great sign to see the braid peel off the big eggbeater reel sitting in the rod holder with the bail arm open. The trick is trying to close the bail arm without losing fingers.

The rigs were allsorts. Phil, Rob and I all used different rigs from bottom bashers to floaters, paternoster - you name we used it and the fish took everything.

Baits were everything from pillies, squid, mackeral fillet, bonito fillet, hussar fillet - didn't seem to matter.

Are the banks all that they are built up to be?

hey guys, just wondering what would be the minimum sized boat you would take to the bar? ??? Bearing in mind the season atm. I have a 15ft runabout but i have mates with bigger ;) so i was just trying to guage how serious a boat i would need. Also how far offshore are they roughly on a reasonabley calm day? We go to Moreton a bit but thats not in open water and it really makes a difference but haven't ventured straight out as yet but from the look of these reports i'd be a fool to write it from off the list... ;D

Cheers, Paul :)

'bout time one of you blokes put the successful Re-Bait trip into words ;) ;D
Top catch fellas [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] Good to see the 'old time fisherman's' marks came up trumps. Good report Brett.
I was just wondering, how does a whale spotter spot whales in the pitch black? I rekon Phill just sent you out there so him and Rob could have a bit of a laugh while you froze your t!ts off :-X ;D

Yes well, tx Brett for extolling my virtues of' The Silent Spew ".

As Rob, said, a report was posted, but, so many reports up, it went to page 2 very quick.

The story of the Silent Spew goes something like this :-

As most of you would know or have been in company of, a sea sick person, once 1 gets crook, another can and usually follows. Why ? because of all the loud noises and grunting, and swearing etc etc. let alone the sight of last nights dinner ( including carrots ), being drifted out for berley.

So, I have a little problem ( inner ear thing ), that when I cannot define the horizon or oreintate myself to where I am, I get Motion Sickness, as opposed to Sea sickness. I even get this way playing those bloody racing video games. So, as not to alert the others on the boat, I have developed a body function called, The Silent Spew. This is uaually done on the water, but I have refined it so than when I have consumed copious amounts of alcohol, and THAT time comes, I can " Spew Silently " without attracting attention.

Having said that, I was fine after a couple and the sun was lighting the sky. Strange fellow that Phill, Brett was thinking, as when he asked me what I was looking at over the side of the boat, I replied " I am just checking the water depth ". The bugga was standing beside me and could not tell I was up-chucking. How quiet is that ?

Now, the challenge is again to all Ausfish Members, have a go at the " Silent Spew ". It is way harder than you think.

And again Brett, thanks M A T E ! :P :P

G/ day boys, seems Phill has turned the " lay down and Die, never to go to Sea again, dry reach your heart OUT" ! dose of sea- sickness into an art form BEAUTIFUL WORK PHILL.

PS great catch of fish boys might have to go up the sunny coast and see a bit of the action its turning on !

No chance of me achieving the 'Silent Spew'.

Only time I spewed was when I did the Bar Crossing course with Bill. He gave me a 11 outta 10 for sound effects, color, and slick content. ;D

My secret plan actually worked; I ended up driving 75% of the time to keep my mine off 'things'

Got back to Amity and really munched down his drinks and cookies tho...... funny that. :P

Cheers,

PS actually felt sorry for the 2 other guys, they didn't really get their moneys worth.

Oops,

Sorry about making a different post - that's what happens when you turn your back on this place for a couple of days - too many fish being caught ;D

But Phil - if I hadn't posted my version of the report - how would anyone know about the silent spew ;D

Oh and then seems to be either a problem with my private message or email systems because I haven't recieved those marks yet ;D ;D ;D

Spew Boy ;D (you won't be the last mate),

Could you please send Brett the marks ready for OUR ;D "Bogey" missions this winter.

Geez, sure was some decent Snappa pulled from the wider grounds last weekend.

This weekend is looking like crap, 3m seas with 20 - 25 knot winds :o :o

Cheers
Craig.
