Gaday all.
the Dpi had a flathead capture study this weekend, to study the effects of different types of hooks and how they afect the fish with reguards to where the fish was hooked.
Saturday 60 odd flathead where captured from the pin area and Gold Coast.
while sundays effort was around 70 at 3pm from the same areas.
they ( the DPI ) supplied 2 diferent types of hooks and bait and we had to fish 30 minites with each,on a rotating basis.
as the flathead come aboard a radio call was made and they would come pick them up. simple.
i only fished sunday as a deckie.
while the flathead where around , Cloud 9 doesn't like Bait fishing Flathead. :-/
with 3 fishers on the boat we managed 13 fish for the day.
9 of those being flathead.from 21cm to 36cm.
i managed only 4 fish for the day by my first fish for the day was a pearla.
they other 2 aboard Whippet ( the boat.) had been getting plenty of hits and a few fish to to my zip. we noticed the birds going nuts on the Bar so I says lets have a go for a tailor ;D
we gets there and theres 3 boats there first and aboard 1 there's 3 guys hooked up another 1 guy hooked up so here's a good spot.
Denis casts out the back and im thinking thats not where the fish are.
so i cast towards the other boats and im fishing super lite gear .
my rod is a 2kg live fibre, caprice 1000 reel and 4Lb braid. 10lb leader.
and im baited with a white bait supplied by the DPI on a #4 circle hook.
not tailor gear by a long shot.
anyway i cast out towards the other boats and 1 turn of the handle and im on.
im thinking im about to get bitten off. but the reels just going ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZ
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
and im thinking ok guys you better wind in im running out of line here.
im thinking also this has got to be the best tailor ive ever got.
5 minutes in and im thinking these circle hooks are great, hooked in the corner of its mouth away from the teeth. 8-)
10 minutes in and the Captains calling it a Cobia. NA
im still thinking tailor. but a horse.
20 minutes and my arms starting to ache.
and still haven't seen colour.
by this time were about 4km's from the hookup spot, and out over the bar.
which is lucky there was no waves today. the pin was flat as glass. 8-)
25minute mark and ive seen a tuna shape 40-50 meters away.
the reel must be getting warm but it didn't stop ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
long enough to feel it.
35minutes and the fights over ;) i had to thumb the reel to bring the fish towards the boat cos it was knacked and so was I.
end result. of 35minutes battle 5.6Kgs of Macktuna, on a 2kg rod and 4lb fireline, with 10lb siglon leader. ;D
that made up for the 3 other fish i got for the day flathead 21cm. bream 23 cm and a tailor 33cm.
all on the bait that the DPI supplied and a circle hook.

Cheers Cloud 9

Hey Jamie,

Cracker of an effort mate - that has to be good for the 50 dollar voucher - just in time so you can get more of your secret rubbers for the classic!

I missed out on the flathead study due to family issues - shame as it looked like a good day to be on the water.
