This is my first post on Ausfish. So here I go.
To give you some back ground over the passed few years I have had a lot of trouble landing my 1st snapper. Been on charter boat trips everyone catching snapper around me but no luck every kind of fish but the one that I wanted SNAPPER. Even started fishing Murphys and guess what the guy I took out landed a snapper. So after fishing Murphys for the passed 6 months started getting a bit ticked off that I still had not landed a snapper. It became a laughing point with my mates. In the beginning of august we had a magic day flat as a tack. Snapped the anchor rope at Murphys. >:( Wouldn't read about it. I was with my other half who is as keen on the fishing as I am. With no anchor we decided to troll a few lures and since the weather was so good we went east from murphys. Have not been far out before. After 2.5 hours we only had one hit. I looked at my chart plotter and a reef was only about 5 km further east from where we were. I got the hot 500 spots out and #was excited to find out it was the sothern end of the banks.
We pulled up the lines and shot for it. Dodging a few whales we tried to drift over some reef and the run was to fast. So we just sounded around and marked a few spots. After an hour we headed back the the ramp. The water was glass so we came back at full tilt. Made it back in an hour.
The other half gave me a down rigger for my birthday. It was on the boat about 20 min after getting it. But due to the weather we did not get a chance to use it till the 21 of august.
On the Sat night we had made a decision to make our way to a mates place who lives a coolum. We took the chance and took the boat up. We had a few and I went to bed early. The report did not look promissing. We decided to make a decision to leave later as the morning report said winds decreasing at 10 am. We put the boat in at 7.30 and waited at murphys till the chop and wind backed off. At about 9 it started to back off so we headed out to the banks.
1st spot we hooked up to 2 kingies. We then pulled up anchor. Yes had one this time ;D. We found a spot that looked very good. Used the down rigger to lower the berly bomb and keeped this up for about an hour.
Then floated a squid out the back. Then it happened my bait runner went nuts. I nearly fell off my chair. I got so excited I grabbed it to quickly and it spat it. After a few words of frustration I put another out and waited and after 5 min it went again I had a little more self control and waited a few more seconds. I grabed the rod and wound like crazy. I was on. After about 10 min we finally had colour. YES it was my 1st snapper. It was 6 kg and did I get excited. 5 min later my other half hooked up as well. I had to give her a hand and she landed her 1st Snapper. I had a mate in the boat who was not going to come out but I made him. He thanked me later for it.
Anyway we were spoilt this day we ended up with 11 Snapper 9 pearlies and 2 king fish. A magical day had by all. I have attached a few photos
