Went fishing out at otters rock in bramble bay today. Caught a few "bat fish" (or i think they are bat fish) around the 50-60 cm mark. Apparently they are not good eating so all were released but still great fun catching on fairly light gear.

Hi NeilSpeil
That's an unusual catch - what did you catch them on? They are pretty common around structures like buoys and beacons but they very rarely take a bait.

caught the batfish using a paternoster rig and just a bit of squid on some small snapper hooks.

there are also a heap of them in the pine near deep water bend. never line caught one but heaps in the castie. very bony as has been said. bloody sharp fins too.

Generally heaps at the 4 beacons off Tanga's. Tried to entice them with all manner of baits and lures in the past to no avail... often see schools of 50 or more near the surface
