Caught my first fish on a plastic Wednesday morning at the Jumpinpin. Was caught on a 4" Shad Firetiger in color - the brand was bayside. Was such a relief after spending so much time reading all the posts on here and taking in all the advice, let alone the probably $150 i have spent on plastics trying to catch something on them. The Flattie below went 51cm, other catches of the day included one 31cm whiting, one 32cm bream two bloody stingrays and two sand crabs which were caught on rods which were keepers. Amazes me how i can catch keepable sand crabs which were keepers with a rod and none in the pots which were set ::) Guess i may have not given up on those plastics just yet!

Chemmy yeah the whiting and bream were a decent size so were kept, my digestive system has a seafood overload tonight i think. :) Nabs the fish were caught at the gold banks jumpinpin, was wierd because we tried to get through this little inlet and got caught on a bank trying to get through >:( so me boat was on sand for probably 30 mins waiting for the tide to come in - so yeah flatty was caught in about 1 1/2 feet of water :o

All the flatties we saw on the weekend were right up in the shallow water too, nothing exciting tho, all little fellas.

Top effort mate. Youll always remember the first one... its such a good feeling. My first was a flatty of similar size... took me so long to finally nail one. It only gets better from here mate.
Well done

Good on ya mickstar001, sounds like you where ment to fish that spot that day. Some people would crack the sh_ts when that happened, but you turned an ordinary event into a memorable one! GOOD FOR YOU.
Its all down hill from there mate, just keep trying to perfect that same technique that worked that day.

I go in at the tail and work up the backbone, there arent that many bones m8, just a line of thick ones on the the back bone and a few ribs, place the knife on the side of the ones that go to the backbone and cut straight down, repeat on the other side, that's 80% of the bones gone, you can feel for any you missed and pull em by hand, then I just leave the other's in and cook it as is, waste too much flesh hunting the others out.

awesome story - good for you - been there done that - completely frustrating - last Sepember was at Caloundra /Pumistone Passage & despite all high cost /high technology lures tackle etc the best fish was caught was by daughter #3 using old spinner & plastic lure from $10 special box from local tackle box - go figure - her 2 elder brothers are still mighty p*ssed off - Mal M
PS think best flattie plastics are those that give maximum tail movement for minimum effort eg light-weight grubs etc

thanks guys, funnily enough thats exactly how i filetted it Canoedle, did waste a bit of flesh however would prefer that to picking out bones with your teeth every mouthful. Thanks for your help

Its good to see another fisho catching a good fish or two on SP's. I still have not caught a thing on them. I have tried several tackle shops to find out how to buy the dvd on SP fishing. It was made by Steve Starling and Buschie. But apparently it is too old now and you can't buy it. But it could not be that hard to use SP's. I must be doing something wrong. Whenever I do get a bite the tail is always missing and the SP's are not cheap to replace. Perhaps I should try cheaper smaller SP's.
Can anyone give any advice as I will always be a learner and always absorb experienced fishos advice.
Cheers

Vanurose,
I started with some of Starlo and Bushies SPs and found them a bit more forgiving in that they don't fall apart as easily, with the gulps if you feel a bite you can almost guarantee the tail is ruined, where as the squidgeys I got 2 or 3 fish off one tail, and they were cheaper to buy in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I am hooked on the gulps, but they can be expensive. Where do you live? I might be able to show you how I work mine, as this is the best way to learn. ;)
mickstar001,
Me thinks that flathead has hooked you!
You're addicted now!!!
The good thing is....there are plenty more out there.
Well done.

Best way to dodge bones on Flathead is to catch a monster, then steak it ;)
Nice work mate. :)
