Went for a flick this morning with Keith, thought we might be able to get into some Jacks before it got too cold and they got harder to find.
Hit the ramp at around 5.30am and soon after we were tossing plastics (me) and hard bodies (Keith) into likely looking spots. I opened our account for the morning with some nice bream to around 27cm fork length and about 15min later just on the turn of the tide I put my 3" Gulp Fry down beside a sunken tree, only to be stitched up good and proper, only getting back frayed leader - "Jack" we both exclaimed. ;D. A couple of casts later and the next snag in the line, Keith's Jack Snack got hammered, its a Jack he says, but what's that behind it - a 70 - 80cm flatty after a feed of yummy 30 cm Mangrove Jack :o. As soon as it saw the boat - gone :'(. This first Jack was released before we remembered to take a photo :-[
We continued along the banks and I mentioned to Keith there was some likely looking bubbles on the surface near a small tree coming up. It looked like there had been a surface bust up not long before. Keith got his Halco Scorpion right in next to the tree and Bang he's on, the locked drag gave no line and both of us again called it for a Jack - Bingo, nice 45cm specimen to the side of the boat. Keith forgot his net ::) so a nice easy comfort lift and the jacks on board. Quick photo and it's released.
My turn next, I had gone back to bream gear and had an SX-40 on, I cast to the bank and got hammered, called it for a small cod, but boated a small Jack instead 8-).
We kept on for a while, no more Jacks but a mix of bream and flathead followed, all released.
Weirdest catch of the day - my first mullet caught on a soft plastic.
After today I think we'll be chasing Jacks for a little while yet. ;D ;D
Cheers
John
