Went for a flick this morning with Keith, thought we might be able to get into some Jacks before it got too cold and they got harder to find.

Hit the ramp at around 5.30am and soon after we were tossing plastics (me) and hard bodies (Keith) into likely looking spots. I opened our account for the morning with some nice bream to around 27cm fork length and about 15min later just on the turn of the tide I put my 3" Gulp Fry down beside a sunken tree, only to be stitched up good and proper, only getting back frayed leader - "Jack" we both exclaimed. ;D. A couple of casts later and the next snag in the line, Keith's Jack Snack got hammered, its a Jack he says, but what's that behind it - a 70 - 80cm flatty after a feed of yummy 30 cm Mangrove Jack :o. As soon as it saw the boat - gone :'(. This first Jack was released before we remembered to take a photo :-[

We continued along the banks and I mentioned to Keith there was some likely looking bubbles on the surface near a small tree coming up. It looked like there had been a surface bust up not long before. Keith got his Halco Scorpion right in next to the tree and Bang he's on, the locked drag gave no line and both of us again called it for a Jack - Bingo, nice 45cm specimen to the side of the boat. Keith forgot his net ::) so a nice easy comfort lift and the jacks on board. Quick photo and it's released.

My turn next, I had gone back to bream gear and had an SX-40 on, I cast to the bank and got hammered, called it for a small cod, but boated a small Jack instead 8-).

We kept on for a while, no more Jacks but a mix of bream and flathead followed, all released.

Weirdest catch of the day - my first mullet caught on a soft plastic.

After today I think we'll be chasing Jacks for a little while yet. ;D ;D

Cheers

John

John,

Another successful Jack trip without me in the boat! I was sure you would have no chance with the cold snap we just had - looks like we might be able to get a few more before work over the next month or two?

How's Keith's form - he doesn't catch a lot of Jacks, but when he does he always gets the big ones!

When you got stictched up were you using those Bream leaders again ;D

Cheers Guys,

I wasn't to confident of getting any Jacks this morning, especially when we got on the water and the sounder was reading 18.5 degrees.

Hey Marty, I must work out the ratio of Jacks I have caught with and without you on the boat. I might be your mud crab jinx and you might be my Jack jinx ;D. And there is the problem as I think you have got most of yours with me on the boat, oh well I'm happy as long as they are coming on board. :)

And yes, once again for about the 15th time this season, I got busted up by a Jack with 6lb bream leaders. ::) but at least I got some bream too :P

I think Keith's average this season must be over 40cm for all his Jack's, it's been a good one, lets hope it continues for a while yet.

Did you get a water temp reading? I noticed the air temp was only 17 degrees at 6am this morning at the seaway (it was less than that in Toowoomba, escpecially yesterday!)

And there was some southerly in the wind direction - that stat keeps ringing true!

Marty - was around 18.5 degrees when we started and rose steadily to around 24 degrees when we left at around 10.30am. Jacks came on in the last half of the session.

Nice pickup boys. If I had of known there will still jacks about, I wouldnt have been in the seaway on sat morning. Looks like weve still got a month left to chase em. Ive got a tip on a new spot in the coomera from a mate who builds rock walls for a living. I'll tell you about it if it fires.....
Does your mate lose many hardlures getting so close to sunken trees? Ive lost a lot.

Yep, the southerlys ring true again marty.

Hi Andrew,

Look forward to your post about the new jack spot. Let's hope they come on for you.

Keith just got back from Baffle Creek I think he ended up with three Jacks boated and realeased up there. Took up 4 Jack Snacks and came home with one :'( :'(. All lures lost to fish in the snags. But as we know, if you are not losing some, you are not fishing tight enough to the structure. I would love to see a Jacks lair, I'll bet there is a nice collection of lures hanging off a trophy wall ;D ;D.

Good work Gents
JT ur da man, or da jack at least. Consistently coming up with the goods.
The moves on for me tomorrow so watch out Pelican Waters - Scotty's about to rattle every pylon/jetty/mooring around.
Hopefully there won't be too many retired nudists wandering around their houses in the early morning sessions....

Hey Scotty, good luck with the move. Expect to see lots of reports of thumper bream and the occasional Jack from you now. Mate its amazing what you see sometimes when you are on the electric in the canals early in the morning. People forget that we use the canals, and worse some who really should never get naked other than in pitch black darkness forget to close their blinds. [smiley=disappointed.gif]

Cheers
