Went out early am saturday (yesterday) for a SP session on peel squire - caught a few undersize but nothing to keep. For those that were there -.... so many boats could nearly have walked on them to get to south passage from amity banks.... but anyway.
The Longtails were smashing bait everywhere but were so spooky that I couldnt get anywhere near them.... (did anyone catch any?) so didnt catch any of them either :-/ but never mind next time...... hopefully heading out again this week midweek weather permitting, have a spare seat (theres a post in the going fishing section) if theres an experienced operator who wants to show a newbie a thing or two then you're welcome.

I collected about 25 bonito in the Rainbow Channell right up to the South Passage Bar. They were very skittish and feeding on really small white bait.I tried matching the white bait but the only thing i had close in comparison was my home made 20 gram slugs. Although the Bonito were feeding on something a third the size they still took my slugs.
I would hate to think i was on the wrong side of the Amity Banks catching snappa bait and there were longtails on the otherside of the banks. :'(
Mate as there are way more knowledgeable blokes in here that know there stuff i can make a few suggestions , as in try and follow the school for a while, get them used to your boat cruising along with them. Dont fly into where they are feeding as they will just go deep, stay wide.
If they are not taking the lures i suggest grabbing a soft plastic around 4 inch in watermelon and just throw that SP into the boil and let it fall towards the bottom. 9 times out of ten you will hook up. Well maybe not 9 but you get the picture.
Hope that helps in some way.
Cheers
Darryl.

Hi Darryl, Yeh saw about a billion bonito they were skittish as well... saw some guy trying to chuck a handspear at them - so he must have been a bit frustrated too.... do you let your slugs sink before cranking them back or skip them accross the surface? Mostly schools were moving very fast on Satday and not staying in one spot for more than a few seconds - they would sound (go deep) and then resurface 300 meteres away - spent half a tank of fuel chasing..... pretty spectaclar though!
Thanks for the tips - if I ever get close enough to throw in a SP - will do... they'd give me a good run on the 6lb spiderwire.

Christ a handspear :o ;D Well at least your not at that stage yet mate. Longtail can be like that sometimes, but you could go out tomorrow and they could be not intimadated buy your boat, they are funny like that.
Persistance i say, i'm only new to the Bay and love chasing the toothy Critters, but with a v6 175 if there not playing the game and are all skittish it's not worth me chasing them..
When your down at Reddy Bay next stop in and have a chat to Duncan at the local tackle shop there, good bloke and know's how to target the longtails on Sp'S.

Adam i missed that one as i'm over on Russell Island and sometimes they run a bit late for me to get the waterbus home. There has a been a few macks around, longtail up there ::) and i bagged out in 40 minutes a month or so ago in the Rainbow , but as you say it's just about getting out there as much as you can. At least you have the paddock too yourself midweek.
Jason when you blokes fish with cotton wool i have no choice to be quick and clear the deck and give chase. Bloody good fun though. ;D
