Hi all again,
Can you guys settle an argument between my mum and I, is that a baby Gemfish or Gar fish. Caught in Botany Bay last night.

Mate its a bit hard to tell from the angle but it looks like some kind of pike to me.
You need to take the photo without a towel and place the fish on a flat surface.
We can then look up reference books to help you identify.
Cheers Brent :)

I would of but the Bay was as rough as hell last night and the board was full of bait and crap.
I thought pikes only had a top dorsal fin towards the end of the fish, this one's dorsal fin started about 1/2 way down with a 2nd one further back.
thanks.

The gem fish has a prominent black blotch located on the leading part of the dorsal fin.
Also has NO SCALES.
Hope this helps.
