Went for a solo-mission in the Inlet today. Tried baits around the snags but couldn't get past the swarms of Black Bream. Changed tactics to trolling and managed three jacks and a barracuda in the space of an hour or so. Always exciting when a jack hits the lure on braid!

Steve, thats a good feed of jacks there. The inlet seems to be a very consistent with them in the past year or two.

Cuzza,
Jacks are alway targetable throughout the year, during winter, picking the correct days is essential, in some cases it is can be 'hit and miss'...but they are there if you pick your day.
It doesnt have to be hot, it just has to be warmer than the average temp, if the av temp for a week is 24 and it jumps to 28 on a certain day, that would be enough to get the jacks chewing.

I had a hot session on jacks in the middle of winter, but it was just slightly warmer than the weeks average and it was enough to fire them up....we only landed one ;D

Great fish Scuttlebutt, any ideas on length?

Cheers

Mate the jacks have been on the chew down here too. Found this time of the year is always good. Exactly like stirling said that is god advice.

Thanks guys, yeah I've caught Jacks all year round in Cairns, but the last month or so has been better than average. Maybe the prolonged wet season up here has had a positive effect.

The jacks weren't monsters, being between 42 and 44cm, but they still hit hard and taste great - I'd put them up with Coral Trout for eating without hesitation.

Good point by Stirling, though time of tide also has a lot to do with it. There were a few guys getting back as I was launching who caught nothing.

cheers,

steve
