Thanks for the tip chong. Should have seen the slime on the leader. I couldn't bring myself to clean it so I just cut it off - Yuk!!

Caught one just like that t'other day.
Couldn't bear to waste it so I popped it in a post pack to kingtin ::)

kidding!!!!

We used to eat the fresh water ones when I was a kid (eel tailed).
Too long ago to remember what it was like and I've never been able to bring myself to eat one of those mongrels.

cheers,
Owen

Coming from the USA, I still find it interesting how catfish is so prized in the States yet so many people here consider it to be a trash fish. In the USA, you can find it in any grocery store, in restaurants, etc. It's farm raised there and millions of people target them when fishing.

I target the freshwater eel-tailed catfish; very tasty and similar to the catfish in the USA. The regular catfish as pictured above have very small fillets in proportion to the body size and I've found them not to be worth the trouble. Good crab bait though.

If you've ever seen fish fillets in Woolworth's marketed as "Freshwater Basa", it is actually catfish.

What you caught was a Salmon Catfish. Grows to 10kg plus. Strong fighter but still a catfish. As far as cleaning and eating, make sure you have a strong stomach. Just cleaning up what 1 spewed up on deck brought instant dry wretching. You did the smart thing cutting off at side of the boat.
