Hi All
After chasing Bream, flatties and gt's for the last few Mondays I decided to have a look for the fresher varieties.I got on the water at first light and it payed off. I started off taking a few pics of the scenery and then decided to get my ass into gear and start chucking some lures about. First cast with a topwater produced a 38cm Bass. Well I thought I was goint to brain the m. But as it usually happens I didnt get another fish for about half an hour until I eventually cracked a pattern and managed to get a few Bass for my efforts. The Bream were actually making life very difficult and at one stage I was catching 5 bream to every Bass. They were mostly small fish in the 20- 25cmclass until the tide got a bit lower then they size gradually got better. They were good fun catching them on top waters. Most of the fish were caught on the surface including a stonker Bream which I dropped at the net. Would have gone a kilo plus easy and had me jumping up and down on my hat until I saw a guy on the bank laughing at me. Well ile be back to catch the Bream another day and it was good to get some good Bass for a change. Here are a few pics
Good fishing to you all.

Hi Rod,
Good to see you tried to fish on different tune and quite a challenge to score a bass than breams.
I must tell that net is innovation & I never seen the plastic net before and doubt if it’s last long life than nylon nets
Cheers

Yeah they are pretty good mate. It sounds like they were tested in the states pretty thoroughly before they went on the market and they recon they would have no hassles lastings. I will be getting another one soon, the bigger size.

Nice one Rod, always trying new things and succeeding.
Do you know any good sites to visit on updates back home for the Cape. Booked a ticket back to the motherland for Jul/Aug? Taking my best mate from Mel, who's never been overseas B4 and wanted to try our luck, gonna be a bit chilly. Also have you ever fished Knysna, will be there a couple days, the rest in Cape Town. Can't wait to get him back for the Dropbear stories he first told me when I arrived here 6 years ago, he also told me that Cicadas suck your blood when they latch onto you, had me worried for a few months until I made a fool of myself at a Braai when a couple Aussie guys said I wish those Cicadas would piss off, man did I run, they all laughed when I asked why they were so casual and weren't worried?
I'm going to tell him that Baboons are really friendly and like the red bum scratched, will have the camera rolling. ;D
Cheers mate

Yeah and when you take him through the bush tell him to watch out for the lions. Man we caught so many guys out like that on charters.
There is a news web site you can check out just use ananzi to search it.
I fished Groenvlei for Bass, the lagoon for leeries and tailor with plugs and fished the surf for raggies at sedgefield. There should be a few good Galjoen and Cracker around the heads that time of year, Big pieces of red bait are the go. The freshwater side will be a bit quiet but the sea should be firing.
Good Luck

Thanks mate, love the rooi ass, big stinky bits. The lions call is a good one, will have to pop that a couple times, ha ha.
Was thinking of Gallies off the rocks around cape point and rooi els, will give Knysna a good go though. Any kob around off the wilderness and plett area? Will go to Humansdorp too for a surf at Cape st francsis, hope to wet the surf rods there.
Will I get away with a t-curve 7ft spin stick 2-5kg with a stradic 2500 and 10lb fireline in the lagoon at Knysna?
Thanks again mate, chat soon.

You lucky b*stards!!
I've caught a few decent leervis on FLY in Hermanus lagoon (1992!!), but spinning off the rocks between the Whale museum and the lagoon mouth can be quite productive. Rooi aas- jees there's something I have n't smelt for a while!!! (Reminds me of my ex..)
Anyhoo, if you can get out off Cape Point, we've nailed 10-15kg yellowfin tuna- just have to fight the bloody GW sharks for 'em! Apparently Theewaterskloof dam is n't even worth it anymore. Pulled 3lb+ bass from the banks on a texas-rigged worms (yes folks, I was fishing plastics in SA in the late 80's/ early 90's!!). I was also mates with the Head ranger at the Jonkershoek Trout Hatchery- he had al the keys to the State impoundments around Cape Town. ::)
Even fished the dams at the AECI explosives factory on the N1 freeway, just aoutside Somerset-West- Tony got an 8lb largemouth bass to the boat then it took one look at him and made a bolt for the sunken tree we were casting at....
"F**k this!" Tony says and jumps in and pops back 10 seconds later with an arm-length bass chewing on his thumb. n Boer maak n plan ekse!
Enjoy, make sure you have loaded weapon at all times and have a beer at the Brass Bell pub in Chalk Bay (Just before Fish Hoek on the left hand side- pub is on the water with saltwater pool)

Thanks Jim, Know the Brass bell very well as I lived in Vis Hoek next to Kalk Bay for 23 years, caught plenty Kob off the wall and on standfontein beach, with the odd big Elf and geelbeck, if it was summer I would have had a spin with slugs for yellowtail off the rocks. Don't worry mate i have the Cape point area sussed too, will be heading there, just hope the Bobos aren't to thick. Will check out Hermanus and then head to the Gamtoos like Rod said.
Will be spinning in Lakeside lagoon as well, picked some nice Leeries up there over the years.........will enjoy for sure.
