Headed out round peel island yesterday with another boat for one of my last attempts of the year to land a longtail. We chased the squire round for a while picking up one legal before we got a phone call from the other boat that they'd found some surface action. we played rounf with the squire until they went off the bite and then shot off to join them. we found the tuna and Matt hooked up on his first cast. The rapidly disappearing line on his 2500 stradic had me rushing to the motor to give chase. After nearly half an hour and having to give chase 3 or 4 times i landed a gaff shot. The tuna was bang on a metre in length and a guestamated 10kg. We met up with the other boat to find that that had come accross a school of large spotties but all there hook ups had resulted in bit offs. We set out again to find the tuna this time with matt driving to give me a shot at scoring one. within half a dozen casts i'd hooked up on a fish identicle is size to matts after another half hour i landed my first longtail and on 10lb line aswell. My next cast resulted on another hook up but the fish pulled the hook under the boat after about the 20 minute mark which half counted since we were releasing the fish anyway. after that the fish went quiet and we finished of the day with a couple of bonito and jellybean mack tuna.

The legal squire i caught also had a tag in it so if someone could tell me where to send the info to it would be greatly appreciated.

Jeremy,

congrats on your first longtail. Very tough fighters and memorable experience! On slugs or SPs?

There is a number on the tag to call, but anyway it is 1800 077 001.

The longtail were taken on sp's. Thanks for the number, the tag had a layer of crud built up on it that must have been covering the phone number.

Well done Jeremy87. Must be stoked to catch your first. I'm still to get a look in at one. Cheers mate.
Rich.

PS: What size and type of plastic was it caught on?

3 inch atomics and 4 inch power baits were the go. anything with a bit of silver or gold in a natural colour seemed to work. We used 1/6th ounce heavy guage 3/0 tt's and all of the hooks came out partially straightened even though we were running light line.
