Hi guys,
Caught my first ever BARRA ;D on saturday as the sun disappeared off rocks in Townsviile. What an adrenalin rush that was. I got some nice live herring and mlley out of Ross river and went to breakwater rocks. Put on a large mullet(18cm) and set the drag at almost free spool. After a while I noticed something happening on the end of my line so hesaved the rod out of the rock crevaces and let the line go slack. It was then that OLD PINKEYE decided to swallow the bait. Line was peeling off at quite a rate and whilst tightening the drag I struck. Not much fighting as I reeled him in. As he got close to the rocks the tailwalking started. He was not happy. Got him to the edge and with the hook in the lip lifted him out onto a rock platform.
I have a few Barra scars from slipping on the rocks and getting nicked by his gill rakers as he decided to jump around and spit the 3/0 hook.
I am slowly coming down from a great@afternoon on the water. It weighed around 5 kg and measured at 78cm. I am sure it will taste good seen as it was my first. It is also my biggewst fish to date beating my old record of a 2.5kg Flathead.
happy fishing guys

Well done buddy.
I busted my ar$e fishing that breakwall on Thursday arvy with live prawns and live mullet for one bust off. Just in case you didn't know Krazi-kev you can get top bait in the corner on the sand at the end of the breakwall. I picked up about 2-3 kg of prawns in that corner over the weekend. Also fisherd up the Bohle on Sunday night for nothing even ith live prawns again. I was suspicious when I realised we were the only boat at the mouth of the creek though :'(

hi Damo,
I know about that spot. I have just been lazy to walk up there. I was thinking that I should try there again as the herring I have been getting are very small. Big mud mullet are quite easy to catch in the cast net near Aplins ( close to home).
I am glad to hear thjat you got prawns there. I have never had that luck. Trevalley on the incoming tide were around Monday morning with 5 coming home with me to be manufactured into a great sashimi lunch.
Happy fishing mate

Yoo hoo Kev!!
Ya can't have that time on the water without finally scoring a result!!
Chances are the 2nd might be a little easier - you realise "okay, so I am doing something right".
Well done

Cooking tip:
If it hasn't been frozen:
Cut thin and fried in BUTTER with a touch of salt and a dribble of lemon juice JUST before you take it out. No more 1/2 min each side.
Better than .... well, maybe not.

Hi Mozza,
Thanks for the cooking tip. Another thanks for the spot you showed me. Thats where I tend to collect my live bait from these days.
I will however try again for live bait at the breakwater because I think the herring are a little small these days and die off very quickly.
I have been cast netting near your place for some big Mullet.
Anyway, happy fishing mate
How did you go on the weekend?

Hi Noodles,
Now it's your turn mate. I go fishing around 2-3 times per week every week. By reading your posts, you also get out a fair bit. As Mozza says.If you have a line in the water so many times, you have got to come good sometime. Your time is about now.
Good luck mate
I have heard the locals say that during the cooler months the Barra actually are still to be had and the salty's like to hunt very close to rocks as rocks retain heat and water around the rocks are still warm enough to keep them active.
The challenge is on............go get em

This was stay-at-home weather Kev,
Took the family out to the mouth of the Ross for a couple of hours crabbing and fishing. Windy and cold. Came back with a couple of crabs but not much on the fishing front although it was perfect SP water - nice and clear and obvious 'lizard' country. Couldn't be bothered changing over to lures - just lazy, I guess.
We don't eat crabs so the neighbours were happy. Although a hot-as-hell curry is on the cards with the next capture.
I enjoy crabbing and the kids love it so I drag the pots out every now and then.
Waiting for some calmer weather to try for some makka dakkas.

Hi Mozza,
I am also waiting until we can get some calmer weather(less windy) and I am considering hiring a tinny for a few hours in Horseshoe bay.
I would love to troll some lures for macs. Only ever caught an undersized mackeral
next week night tides are getting bigger............does that mean that the fish tend to a lot quieter because of the bigger runs?? I will no doubt go out to experiment somewhere out of the wind
Crabs.............yummmmmmm!!!!!!
