With the rain finally looking like it was slowing down we decided to for a quick trip out in the bay. it was our first trip to mud and we started on the northern side. On the first drop i scored a nice little parrot about 35cm :o a good first impression. we got a few litle whiptail and some good pike ( bait)and then the pilchard floter whet off. It went hard but sluggish and we called it for a shark or ray but hoping it was just a lazy knobby snapper. after 10 minutes of hard fighting and not much ground gained a great big turtle sufaced about 30m away :'(.. we estimated it to be a fair bit over 50kg but we cut it off knowing that the hooks would rust away. after that ecitement a nailed another colourful parrot about the same size as the first quickly followed by a 40cm blackall/slatey.

the rain had eased off and the sun came out and it was a good day but all we caught after that were whiptails and other pickers. we used pillys, squid and pike flesh. several times we pulled weed off the bottom and we i thought we would get some squire in that sort of environment but not one was landed all day. i was suprised we didnt get any undersized ones and any tips or suggestions on where i could find some next time would be great.

in the end it glassed out and we went back to the boat ramp with a small feed and it was a great day to be on the water.

Hi Bball,

Were you fishing out of a bowrider with 3 guys on board? If so you are fishing in the general area to catch fish. Be patient and persistance will pay off. Also helps to get there before day break. Fish have been few and far between in that area lately, for us anyway. Have heard reports of a few nice ones being catch late arvo, early evening though.

Hi guys , gather I was in the same area, saw the guys in the bowrider hooked up on something largish for awhile. I was in the poly 4.5 frontrunner. Not much to report - did manage a few squire but all short by varying margins. Whiptails were pretty thick at on stage. Could see fish move thru on the sounder. Left Mud to try Harrys - but no luck except for a short tussle with a 6 foot hammerhead and did not see much of size caught down that way. Tried St Helena on the way back -no luck. Still a nice day on the water.
