Headed up to Teewah for 5 or 6 days camping and fishing. Was greeted on thursday arvo with large swell and strong winds and of course rain, on the drive up to our camp spot approximately 30km up the beach noticed lots of good formations on the beach most of which I had a go at in my search for fish, well for the first two to three days I threw every type and size of slug I had ranging from 10gm to 105gm raiders, river to sea, halcos and soft plastics in a variety of colours and shapes after some 10 000 casts (at least thats how it felt) I had the huge return of 1 whiting and a dart which was smaller than the lure that caught it.
Finally on Sunday while casting 85gm and 105gm lures to a distant bank bingo my first real fish a tailor in the 700-800gm range, I then proceeded to catch quite a few in this range with many more spitting the trebles in the wash. This pattern continued at any hour of the day till we left on wednesday morning. I never used any bait all fish were caught on slugs 85-105gm. Other fishermen using bait (pillies and flesh) in gutters close by werent as successful on the tailor but that could be just that the fish were in front of me and not them. What was good was that even though i was catching fish I didnt have people trying to fish the same spot everyone had a look and moved onto there own spot. Isnt that unusual.
I did notice that any cast that got the face of an unbroken wave was always devoured while other casts werent as sucessful.
Although the long catsing was hard work it was enjoyable as I'd tried a few methods to catch fish before having a go at the far banks, on the way back home I noticed a bloke fishing down towards the river mouth he had a car which matched the description given to me by Slider so I pulled over and went to say G'day as I headed over he pulled in a chopper which was unhooked and released. I had agood time chatting to Slider and learnt a few things as well, I had a good look at the Slider Lure particularly the hook setup which I will be trialling when I get out down Northern NSW this weekend as I did drop a hell of a lot of fish this trip.
Overall a good trip but I dont know how many times I said this is the last cast.
I am looking forward to heading up there later in the season for a day or twos fishing.

Oops forgot the Rainbow bit, lots and I mean lots of tiny choppers in the bay hooking into the bait fish but I couldnt get them to take a lure of any size or shape including slugs, hardbodies or soft plastics and I never saw the bloke using pillies take anything either. There were a few flathead around a bit scattered but you could catch a few before having to move on a bit up or down the beach, there was no real size to them but it broke the monotony. The flathead responded to any of the usual techniques bait or lure.

Gday John

Great that you stopped to say hello and I look forward to the next time you're up.
I got about another 10 choppers after you left but they were all small.
Went down again this morning and couldn't get a strike anywhere. Then a couple of guys I know pulled up saying they weren't finding anything on eugaries either when they had been for the last couple of days. Turns out that there were a lot of mullet go over the ferry last night for the first time for about 2 weeks. :(

Hi again, well as we talked about I had seen them going up and down the beach everyday, it was only a matter of time before they got stuck in >:(. It's a real shame :'( because the formations on the beach looked fanatastic and given an opportunity they would no doubt fish really well. But the fish get taken as bycatch before they get much past the river mouth.
Just for interest the trip cost me around $300 including fees, fuel, ice, food, beer etc which was all bought locally no tackle costs included. If I caught 20kg of fish most of which were released this works out that I am paying around $15 a kilo compare that to the wholesale price of Tailor. Even if I caught a 100kg of fish this is still more than the wholesale price of Tailor. If there are no fish there I'll probably go elsewhere and spend nothing in the local area.

Better use of a resource isn't it.

It must be pretty disapointing for a newby fisherperson who does not have access to a large variety of techniques to try and get a feed. The Kmart special and a pilly on the end of a steel trace just wont work the way a similar presentation would have 20 years ago

Your perserverance paid off and sounds like you had a great time.
