Still on my personal quest for a 60cm+ squire i decided that with ideal conditions on friday an earlier start was in order. Maybe those bigger fish will feed more freely in the dark. So it was up a 2am and i arrived at mud at 3.30. The water was calm with a slight SE breeze to give a nice drift. started casting plastics and almost immediately scored a nice squire of 47cm. A few drifts later I had a nice hit and lost about 10m of line before the hooks pulled. It sure felt like a squire, maybe this would be my morning. Anyway fishing was fairly uneventful until about 7.30 when i located a nice bait ball with plenty of tailor and squire in attendance. each drift was producing kepper squire and i ended up bagging another 3 while releasing plenty of fish up to 45cm. By now i was thinking it's only a matter of time till i hook that bigger fish. about 150m to the side of me there was a guy in hornet drifting along and i had not noticed him getting many strikes and on the top of one of my drifts as he drew level with me and we drifted over the school side by side. as we drifted we both hooked up i quickly released another squire abut 40ish cm and looked over and could se he was struggling with his fish. maybe he fishing ultra light i thought. but as he finally got the fish closer i could see he was excited. he netted the fish and weighed it at 3.5 kg... very nice fish. a quick chat and we're both using the same weight heads but different tails....shouldn't make any difference. he offered me one of his tails but i am of the opinion that if you get a soft plastic into the right spot with the right fish the choice of tail is not so important. so we both start another drift, both hook up and i quickly release another fish, meanwhile i can hear his drag screaming. a few very nervous minutes later he lands a horse of a fish which weighed 4 kg. a very nice fish indeed. MaybeI should change tails.Just then i remembered i had some of the offending tails tucked into the back of my plastics. so on with the new tail and back to a new drift. More squire, the odd tailor and my friend in the next boat landed a nice flattie. with family commitments looming i had to call it stumps but the bite had tapered off anyway.
I had afantastic mornings fishing and it was great to see some larger fish landed albeit in another boat. think i might be able to sneak out thursday so you never know maybe there's a horse out there just waiting for me.
cheers
