Finally got out for a fish at Mud on Saturday morning. Took my old man out for a fish. Great conditions greeted us as we left Whyte Island for the run out through the river. I planned to fish plastics while the old man insisted on using his favourite bait. I stirred him on the way out about whether his taped up rod and old no drag alvey would be up to the challenge.
Sure enough first drift line peels off the old alvey in a hurry with the old man struggling to hold on. Half the spool disappears in a very short time and his "place the hand on the spool drag system" is struggling to slow down the freight train. After a few tense minutes we boat a nice 58cm snapper - a PB for the old man.
I managed a smaller keeper squire on a 4 inch gulp and numerous just unders. A nice flathead again by the old man ends a good morning.
Here are a few pics of the catch. The old man was a bit camera shy so I posed with his fish!!

Ain't that a thrill! Goodonyer Lager and Dad. That will keep the old man talking for a while.

This seems to be a terrific squire/snapper season. Great reports from lots of people.

Well done!

Nathan it was obviously the gear that he was using, so are you going to upgrade to a new alvey now.

Nice catch

Thanks for replies. The old man was very impressed with his catch and will be talking about it for a while.
Mickstar - we fished the south-west corner of mud drifting in amongst the multitude of anchored boats.

Thats a nice fish your dad got Nathan ;D

I am old school as well and really only fish fresh baits ( Fat lot of good it's done me so far ) in the quest for my first squire / snapper.

Anyway I will keep trying as it will surely happen one day :)

Well done and I hope you and your dad have more great trips :D

Peter. ;)
