My self and 2 mates decided to head out in the bay for a bit of a fish and camp sat night somewhere and return sunday arvo. Good plan but it just didnt come together. Sat morning, after filling up and spiling unleaded everywhere, get to the ramp at cleveland at about 9am, pouring rain. Bugger it wesay and head out. Going out through the channel, $hit, forgot to get ice. Never mind, we'll just stop in at Dunwich and get some there. Head across through driving rain and finally anchor near Birdisland to sort out our rigs and organise teh boat a bit. Righto, all set, start motor......start motor....... start motor....... bugger. wait whats that sound?? The starter motor was still spinning even thpugh the key was out of the ignition and the gear not engaged. Interesting, take cable off battery. Stops. Replace cable, starts again. Crap. take pos feed off starter motor and hand start. Fires first go, all is well. Head over to Dunwich, get some ice and a few yabbies. Poke up the rainbow channel anchor for a fish. First cast i get a small bream on yabbie but was not legal so back he went. 2nd cast got a pike on yabbie and rigged him up as a live bait. After no more hits we hand started the motor again and headedup the channel more trolling the pike and a lure. Only thing caught was an Osprey! Swooped down and grabbed the pike and took off at a rate of knots! Quickly cut the line whilst rolling round pissing our selves in laughter. Pull up for lunch, hit by a few squalls. Ate tuna on bread that had been contaminated wihtt eh smell of unleaded, not nice. hand start motor again and get across to Kooringal and Days gutter. Even though it was 2/3 tide we still had to push it through a fair way. Get to the sandhills at moreton just before dusk and set up camp. Climbed tot eh top of the big sandhill for a few beers on sunset. during the night got a few squalls but nothing too bad. Next morning wake up to find what we though wa going to be a high tide not soo high. Turns out that sat night the tide was huge (2.4m) and sunday morning tide only 1.2m. Boat is right up the beach and not moving. After much diging and straining to move it before the tide went down too far we had to give up. Just too heavy and the tide was now receeding faster than we could push. $hit. Next high not till 8pm. We decide to walk to kooringal for some food, and after a 2hr walk we get there to find that the shop is very low on stock, no bread, pasta, fresh food at all. Get a packet of chips and a drink each and a few tins of baked beans for dinner and walk to 2hrs back to the sandhills. Didnt get the boat floating again tll about 6:30pm, too late to make a run across the bay as we were all not experienced at night boating. Walk the boat out pretty far over the flats and reitre to feast on baked beans and tinned spagghetti. Few squalls over night. This morning even though we had walked the boat out really far it was dry again but once we packed up the gear the tide was high enought to get it out. reconnect starter motor which is now working normally again and bolt back to cleveland.
Think that the next time we go out we will be sea legends because we had almost everything possibly go wrong on our first trip!
