Kayaks on the roof Jeb and I headed down to Coomera for a fish, just on daybreak armed with two breamin outfits 1500 reel spooled with 4lb fire 4lb & 8 lb yamatoyo leader.after a few cast I landed my first bream of the session 26 cm to the fork, but what was about to follow I thought I could only Dreammm of.The next pontoon the water erupted with bait fish being bailed up and smashed Iwent to cast a 6"Gulp sandworm I was using for bream but remembered I had pink 3" Ecogear Paddletail rigged up unweighted for top water fishing on the other rod.
I quickly got cast away& started to retrieve when this massive bow wave rose up behind it,my reel begin to scream nearly spooling me on it first run I stop the spool with my hand & I took off down the river being towed about 12 knots with Jeb paddling hard to keep up with me.Luck went my way staying out in open water then it was at stalemate for over an hour I couldn't lift him off the bottom with 1-3 kg rod.Pulsing round &round the kayak with the drag set right the rod felt like it was going to explode creaking & groaning my first sight of colour I thought he was around the 4 kg mark. With Jeb waiting to help with landing the fish slowly coming to the surface passing his kayak he look at me and said your kidding it's a BUS,then pasing me I got my first good look at the Beast .
Then with the adrenalin reaching a new high Jeb pulled off a great tail grab to land it.About 2 hour of intenifying rush that fishing junkie like myself never thought possible a plastic surgeon couldn't get the smile of my face a 96 cm 9. 8 kg trevally . Cheers fishbrain

You caught it where?
The photographic evidence does not lie, the background looks very familiar territory as I am sure I travelled it at some time. I would think this a typical capture up north in the gulf, but here in the Coomera?? ::)
Totally awesome, next time you rig a pink placcie like that, I bet you will get the shakes just re -living this battle!!
Well done! ;)

Fishbrain welcome on board and with that story i think a few more people here will be thinking about the possiblities from a floating bit of tuppaware, either that or you've just turned part of the coomera into a carpark for a while. :) Congratulations on a mighty fish and mighty fight, a pity you couldn't just put a harness on it and made it tow you back to the launch area. Did it make it on telly in the end?

Fishbrain,
Just to echo the other readers, that is a sensational story and the fish of a lifetime :o :o. You could pull that from a bommie up North on 50 pound braid and a 10 inch popper and be totally stoked to land him. But to pull him out of the Coomera River on 4 pound main with 8 pound leader, that is truly amazing. Like the others have said, it is testament to your angling skill and patience to win that battle, i know myself i have lost the majority of my bigger fish on plastics (up to about a 1/5 of that ones size) due to panic, wrong drag setting etc. That will be one hell of a story for the grandkids.
PS. Wasn't the best trip overall though. Only two fish boated for the session! ;) ;D I would have expected a few more bream from you fella's at this time of year... ::) ::) ;D ;D
All the best. Keep us up to date on your next angling adventures,
cheers Fritzy

Hmmmm, a mate of mine at work told me to check it out, within 10 minutes the whole of the Courier Mail was talking about it- bloody well done mate! I had a little trouble finding your reel in the pic, but I think I found it between yer forefinger and thumb.... :o HOW SMALL?
Good effort mate, you're the envy of more people than I know..
BTW, what sorta jighead was it on, as someone said earlier- had to be a strong hook not to pull it. Was it a TT?
Absoloootly bootiful mate,

That is a fantastic fish mate. If you can put a harness around it you might have just solved any paddling problems. Just hold on and ski anywhere it wants to go.

Hmmm, I just found this thread, Ive been busy the last few weeks.
I saw this report on nuggets TV news the friday before last. I was taping it, as I usually do, and replayed it quite a few times to show my missus. Nice of nugget to give away the spot?
Great catch, and a story you wont forget. Im now totally convinced that stealth is the most important ingredient in fishing.

HI Joel, Just coming down from the whole experience its opened new limits on what can caught on a kayak on light gear I thought 4kg would max my gear out I think the yak's like an extra drag. Cheers fishbrain
