Howdy Folks, Steven, Jim and I set off from Raby Bay Ramp at 5-45am to try our luck using Steve:s new secret weapon.
This stealth fishing sure is great.
Steven recently purchased a bow mount Minn Kota and today we had an oppertunity to put it through its paces.
First location and the electric went to work.
The breeze was s/w at 10 knots and we started to pull a few under size squire before i picked up the 1st keeper at 40cms.
The tide was full at 6am and it went quiet around this time so we decided to drift the reef from Ormiston all the way to the Huybers using the Kota to keep us on track.
Plenty of small squire and Tailor with the odd GRINNER and then as we entered the 2 metre shallows the bigger squire hit the plastics.
Best fish went to Steve and measured 47cms followed by a 45cms minutes latter.
The showers started accross the bay and the fish saw the overcast time to feed up in the shallow water but when the full sunshine appeared they went deeper again.
Wello is just starting to fire now after a slow last few months and the water seems to be not quite as clear.
I CAN'T WAIT TILL THE GRASSIES SHOW UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the top day Steve it was awsome fishing in stealth mode for a change.
Cheers Brent :D

Just a quick question for Steve... how did you mount the leccy onto your boat? and where did you fit the controls?...I have a 5m fibreglass cuddy cab - would love to go stealth - but dont know how to go about it - probably would'nt push my heavy beast anyway... :-[
Good work guys - made a pretty ordinary day look alright!! and thanks for the tips about the shallows - I learn a lot just from seeing what other fishos do - so thanks!! [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Today was a very good day :) Thanks Jim and Brent for coming ride it was one of those very enjoyable days. The new electric did very well and would have gotten about 7 hours out of the battery and still had more grunt in it when we finished. Brent lost a few very good fish today fish might have been gut hooked. Home by 4:30pm with the boat cleand a very short time later. The Battery is now on charge ready for the next trip.
Its a must to get a high amp hour battery with a good charger. I have a 20amp charger which is a commercial switch mode charger used for high current battery banks. Here is a Web link that might help http://www.powersaver.com.au/smartchargers.htm

Adam i have a mate who owns a 625 cruise craft and he has a transom mounted 65lb thrust minn kota powered by 2/ 12 volt deep cycles.
Pushes the 625 around no problem at all.
The thing about bow mounts is you need to have the bow close to the water or you will be running thin air...lol
I may be wrong but i don't think the leccy shafts come in longer lenghts.
Cheers Brent

Impressive! I'm interested in how the 625 cruisecraft uses an electirc. I've always been a bit hewitant to try one out on mine (5.8m) but maybe wsorth another look!

Good fishin there guys!
I guess you noticed a dramatic reduction in fuel costs using the electric did you? Staying in your favoured strike zone without having to start the main motor again and again in order to start another drift has to be the way to go.
I wonder how long the investment will pay for itself??? Interesting........ [smiley=scholar.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Steven and Brent... Thanks for the info and the pics!! Brent if you could post those photos somewhere of your mates 625 I'd be interested too.
You've got me all keen now to go get one - just have to work out how to mount it.... Steve I noticed you cut your safety bars... interesting - do you still have room for the anchor well? - I think my bow is too high for a bow mount though - and walking through the cuddy cab with all my crap in the way might be a pain to lower and raise... so keen to see the transom mount.
Thanks again guys!!!

G,Day Brian, Yes mate a huge reduction in fuel costs but the best part was this Minn Kota has an auto pilot so you just aim for a beacon an the leccy holds that course.
Another plus is the whisper quiet noise so you won't spook the fish.
We can't wait to get over to Mud and find baitfish holding on the bommies.
We will be able to stay in the strike zone longer now.
Adam i will try to post the 625 transom mounted electric pics next weekend if possible.
Depends if my mate decides to venture out.
Cheers Brent :)
Hey Brent
Looks like you got the fish we couldn't find on Saturday morning! Interesting you got these in 2m as i didn't think anything came from that shallow - as i've not had much success in that depth at Wello.
Good to see some posts again from you too! Have you not been fishing as much or have you not got on to too many of late?

Nice bay squire brent well done ;). Sounded like a great day!
Nice catch Brent good to see you got onto a few. Haven't seen many reports from wello from you lately. Do you guys get many sweetlips at wello and what other species do you catch in summer time at wello?

Nice fish mate. About the electic on the bigger boats I think you will find them a bit hard to use with a bit of wind being mounted on the transom. If you can get a bow mount on i would do this as it pulls the boat around. Depends if you can get a long enough shaft. The transom mounts have to fight the wind to much to turn the boat. Just a thought.

T1 Mate i have been working most Saturdays of late but have managed the odd trip now and then.
Been giving Wello a miss for awhile and concentrating on the big Mud Snapper.
It was about this time last year that Wello started to produce good squire so looks like you may see me out there more often.
Tinn, We encounter a variety of species during the summer months around the Wello area.
Squire, grass sweetlip, moses perch, school and spotty mackerel, sharks, estuary cod, morwong, sand flathead and even the long tails pass by close to the reef edge.
You need plenty of sun screen because its like sitting in a frying pan some days...lol
If you think the squire pull hard on the light gear wait till you get a 40cm grassie !!!!!!!!!!
You have to be quick with the grassies because they head straight for the structure and its all over red rover.
Cheers Brent

Nice catch there boys :) :) :)
2 mtr's of water may need to go explore the shallows next time I am at Wello ;) ;) ;)
As T1 mentioned they must have been the ones we chased into the shallows on Sat ;D ;D ;D
Great to see that wello is producing the goods :) Mud just is not doing it for me at the moment :'(
Grassies at Wello more information Please !!!!!!! I like the sound of that :D :D :D
Peter :)
Thanks Brett! Lookout Wello! If you thought we raided it regularly, wait till summer! Another mad tanning awaits T! How much darker can i get while trying for those Grassies ;D ;D Yum Yum Yum...
Take Care T
PS: Mud/Green also holds some nice Grassies too in summer...

Great White you will find he Grass Sweetlip up on top of the Wello reef in the shallows but be prepared to lose jigheads.
If possible just use a hook with no weight and it will drift very slowly around in the current.
Grassies are a little more challenging on plastics because they really use that tail to power through the water.
I find no; 1 heavy wire hooks have a better hookup rate because the grassies mouth is smaller than the squire and they have a habit of sucking in the plastics and spitting them out quick smart if they feel any weight.
Cheers Brent :)
