After reading a few reports, and speaking to a few of the crew at the Gold Coast Sportsfishing Club, I was tired of hearing about all of the 70cm+ flatties being caught at the pin.
Since I've just moved to the area, I've been spending a bit more time fishing around Crab Island etc, and have not really ventured north to the pin for a while.
Dad and I got up earlyish on Saturday morning and headed out from Paradise Point ramp. Got to a ferw of our spots and drifted about, catching pike only. Checked out the pin bar for nothing, and then had a few drifts in a few likley spots.
We were drifting over a very shallow patch of seemingly barren sand, when a horse of a flattie shot off in front of the boat. It skirted around the boat, and slunk off into the deeper water behind where we had just come from. I fired of a cast after it, ..... and again..... on the third cast, I came up solid and the fight began.
She ran about 15 - 20 meters, and I could tell that the wind was going to make it tough. Dad started the boat, and we chased the fish down. I managed to net her myself, and finally I had a good sized fish for the season. A couple of quick shots and she swam away. The lure was just lodged in the side of her mouth. She was 83 cm, and the first flattie I have ever hooked up to after startling it in the shallows.
