View Full Version : Woody Point early am 8/10 Darkside for me??

Got up at 3 and stuck my nose out the door to discover only a slight breeze. Things were off to a good start!
Decided to throw on an Adam Royter Berkley DVD while I made some toast and coffee and packed the esky..
Watching this excited madman raving about berkley powerbaits made up my mind that I would take no bait! Had I just crossed irreversibly to the dark side? #:o
About half an hour later I was packed and off...Baitless!
The baitless situation changed at the ramp however when a school of poddy mullet was too tempting.. Into the bait tank... Just in case #;) I should mention that i was targeting flathead!
Started drifting #not far from the woody point jetty and got nothing for ages.
It wasn't until after the sun (and wind) had risen that I got a bite... A shovelnose.. on a poddy!
I had been casting a powerbait minnow around with no success up until the sun rose
I should mention that i was targeting flathead!
I had considered a change to some gulps I had and decided that after one more cast I would change to a grub..
I cast out and felt the plastic, began a slow jerking retrieve when suddenly my rod was bent over and the 4kg line I was using was rapidly departing company with the spool.
I tightened the drag a little (something I try never to do, but had no choice! It was lose the line and the fish or just lose the fish!)
The line was kind (i'd underestimated the drag I guess!) and after a a minute or 2 I had a nice 37cm squire in the boat! My first on SP!
I decided not to change to a gulp and after drifting for a few more minutes with no bites decided to set up the same drift again..
It was like clockwork.. Edge of reef appears on sounder. Cast.. .. bite!
Again, the rod bends, but this time with drag set right I didn't have too many problems boating another squire at 38cm...A new PB! #;D

I ran the same drift a couple of more times, this time picking up a couple of bar-tailed flathead just over the limit of 30cm on each drift...
Three of these were released and the fourth kept for breakfast. #:)

As I had a busy day ahead I was back home around 8am reflecting on what was a really enjoyable morning..!

So is it the darkside for me??
Let's see...
I was casting an SP whilst having a live poddy out... so fished them for similar times...

Live poddy... 1 shovelnose.....
berkley 3' minnow...... 2 squire 4 Flathead...

mmmm
;)

only took one pic... sorry about the berley board! Could have chosen a better background!

Go the SP's.

Fished NE Mud Sunday with Bunny Baits (a soft plastic with rabbit fur tails) and no two fish were the same species. Griner, wrasse, squire, flathead and estuary cod. Numerous bite-offs, probably griners, and of course being well and truly bricked a couple of times (always when the rod was in the holder whilst yours truly was rolling a ciggy).

Nice one JT!! There's room for both in my opinion and the (e)sky is the limit from here! 38cm will be a distant memory in the not too distant future!!

Take Care T

Thanks guys!
Still a bit of a way to go T1!
I have to admit to looking forward tocatching the next one more so than any fish before!
The squire have even knocked flathead off the top of my list of best eating fish!
Now all I have to do is start catching squire as often!

Look out for more reports! (once the wind buggers off!)
