Got up this morning and weather was better than expected and with nothing to do thought id try to get my first jack for the season.
This was my 4th trip and i hadn't seen a jack the first 3 trips except the one that stole my mates lure last Sunday when he thought 15lb leader would do the trick ;D I just laughed when he told me that. He now fishes a bit heavier!
Started off this morning with high hopes. It was a bit overcast so i thought it would be a good opportunity to get one of my goals out of the way by getting a jack on popper. The water was super clear and i actually saw a jack come out and smash the popper but didn't hook up. Had about 3 hits all up on the popper with no hook ups before i got the shits and put it away. Have to get up earlier next week when I'm feeling a bit better.
Rest of the day spent throwing hard bodies and plastic. Got a small cod around 30cm to keep me interested then came a small Moses perch. Another half hour went by and then i got smashed beside a pylon next to a pontoon. Loomis buckled over and reel lock up but still taking bursts of line started heading back to his home. I turned the electric and thumbed the spool. Pulled the hooks. FAAARRRRKKK! Thought id lost my first jack for the season. Pulled myself together and fired another cast into the same spot. 2 cranks Bang. I'm on again and pulling just as hard. This time i was to be triumphant. Get him to the surface and its a big cod not what i was hoping for but a good fish no the less. The good thing about fishing by yourself is you get to work all areas but when you get the fish you've got nobody to take the photo.
Fished for about an hour after this and missed one fish, saw another jack come out at the lure only to be spooked by the boat. I got a Long Tom that did a few aerials to finish of my 4th jackless session.
My last few sessions have all yielded cod while chasing jacks, so next session I'm targeting cod and ill get a couple of jacks. ;) Hopefully next week ill be able to post a photo of a jack.
Fingers crossed. Cheers Nick
