Yeah I know it's a bit late but I got myself a timeout on the bench for breaking the rules :( Put the boat in a Cleveland point to take the family out for a run after a nice sleep in ;) Anchored up just before the drop off where it went from about 7 to 3 feet. It was a bit windy so we threw out whole pillies on 2/0 hooks just for the sake of it, not expecting anything! After about 10 minutes mrs, who just happened to be hanging onto my fishing on my shimano rig ::), reel start screaming :o. Happily took over and after about 5 minutes of getting nowhere got the green (never driven a boat before :-X) deckie to up anchor and start to chase. Managed to gain alot of line and get fairly close to whatever it was but I think we got too close and spooked it because it took off faster than previous runs. Unfortunately this time it shot across the other side of the boat to the one I was fishing from and the line was being dragged under the boat. SNAP! :-? So much for braid. Oh well was the best action I've had in the bay after two years of fishing. Just a shame I didn't get to see what it was. Funny, it's the first time I've gone fishing mid week.

:) Cheers,
Jason

Always tough landing big fish when there are obstacles around. A few general rules of thumb which may help you is to always fight the fish from the downwind side of the boat so the boat is getting blown away from the fish and not over it. When chasing a fish to get line back, I always try to use an angle of about 45 degrees to the fish which gives it some play if it wants to change direction. Also, always expect a big fish to take a dive under the boat when it gets close. It almost always happens. At this stage you should be drifting in neutral or driving parallel to the fish.

Anyway, would have been exciting while it lasted. For what it's worth, sounds like it might have been a longtail to me. Better luck next time.
