Hi all
Went out for a quick flick this arvo with the old man to one of our favourite flathead spot, as the tide allowed us to get up there, we thought we could pull a few out as this spot always seems to produce fish, all year round. We were mainly targetting lizards but on this arvo the spot just wasnt firing so after a couple of hours we got frustrated and started to drift back towards home.
We drifted down the entrance to our spot and continued to flick plastics but never got a touch, approaching a nice snag that i use to fish last year was going to be the last oppertunity of the arvo as we were drifting towards open water. After half a dozen casts, nothing came to play, but i thought one more suicide cast would be worth a try, landed the plastic right in amongst the tree. As it hit the water, gave it a quick flick to get it up and over the snag and next minute BANG, my line is almost 2m deep into this snag, immediatly i knew it was a jack. Then reality hit...im using my 2-5kg 7ft bream rod, with 6lb fireline and 15lb leader :-/ and drag at about 65%. Had my fingers on the spool as my rod buckled over trying to rip this mongrel out without busting me off.
He had 3 big runs into this snag, each time taking more line, and i do not know how in the world i managed to pull him out all 3 times but lets just say the gods were with me today, on the 2nd run back in, i caught a glimpse of that pinky redish tinge that came to the surface and thats when my heart almost stopped. Managed to pull him out (unbelievably) and boated a nice 50cm Jack.
Great way to open the account for this summer.
