Having been married successfully for 32 years, the only bit of marital advice that I can give anyone based on my own experience is to marry someone who has low expectations. # ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

A lot of our expectations are crushed, of course, when a relationship fails or even just teeters a bit. # :( #People often really don’t realize that they are trying to hold on to a relationship that is over, finito, ended, kaput – or perhaps just needing a bit of space for a while. # :-[ # People do such silly things :( - for example, almost 25% of all stalking offenders are ex-partners and indeed 49% are acquaintances, in every form that such a description takes. # :-/ #(Just to round off the stats, the majority of offenders are males –88%- and the majority of victims are females – 77%.)

This is pretty serious stuff. #:( #There is even a term used to describe the condition of ex-partners who cannot let go – it is called “Obsessive Ex Syndrome”. #:(

I have always thought that the best way to achieve closure on a dying relationship is to find a new one, just as exciting and perhaps a little different to the old one – and as quickly as possible so that the old is remembered for what was good and the new is enjoyed as being even better. #:)

But who am I to talk? #:-[ #I have to confess that after such a brilliantly enjoyable and successful winter season fishing Mud Island at nights this year, I have been suffering just a bit of “obsessive ex syndrome” myself. # :'( :'( :'( # I am continually wanting to re-live all of those glorious nights with all those great catches of squire and snapper and Jew and tailor and cod and …. – well, you know what I mean. #:'( :'( :'(

In fact, I have been pining every day over the past few weeks :'( #- #every day looking forlornly at the weather forecast hoping for more calm night weather so that I can continue to be seduced in the dark of night by the secret scents, oceanic massages and gentle loving caresses of my beloved Mud Island #::) – especially at the end of a 30lb line with a 40lb leader. #;D ;D ;D

Take yesterday. #I was in raptures all day just anticipating the great night that I would have at Mud Island last night - #a tolerable winds forecast - #a mid evening high tide and a new moon. #What could be better?! #8-)

It started #with an utterly intoxicatingly beautiful sunset over Mud which promised eternal bliss. # :)

Unfortunately though, eternal bliss was not to be. #:-[ #I was bounced around by a brisk easterly all night and did not see a fish’s scale all night. I pulled up the anchor at 11pm with my total catch #for the whole night being a baby shovel-nose ray and a jelly fish that that wrapped itself around my line. # #:'(

I finally had to concede that my night time secretive, solitary, possessive relationship #with Mud Island ended last night #:'( #– or at least, perhaps our relationship should have a cooling off spell for a few months . #:-[

Perhaps until next snapper season. #:) :) :)

But what to do? #I still have such a pining – and lots of bait left-over. #Perhaps, I could seek a new and different relationship….. #;)

So I launched at 7.15 am this morning at Manly to see if there was new life for me, dare I hope, new joy, #at the Harry Atkinson artificial reef. #8-)

I have to say that I was not all that optimistic as I have never had much success at Harry’s. # :-/ In fact my best catches there have been modestly sized (but legal) tuskies. #However, with no crustacean bait on board, I was not expecting any success in that regard. # :-/

Of course, the other downside about Harry’s is that at most times, weekend or week-day, it is like a car-park there # #>:(– unlike weeknights at gorgeous, rapturous, blessed Mud Island. #:-*

Today I was lucky – I had the place to myself until mid-morning when one other boat came along, asked of my success, and then anchored in a couple of different places, both of which were very politely some distance away from me. #So, #I was happy. #:)

However, Harry’s did show me that there is life for me after Mud-at-nights. # :) :) :) #I experienced plenty of action from school mackeral as shown below. #:) :) :) #All fish were caught on pilchards on #gangs of four 4/0 Mustads with 40 lb leader on a 30lb line. #Modest lead was used to get the line on the bottom.

In fact I lost about six or seven fish on my 6500B bait-runner which was rigged in bait-runner mode with unweighted pillies on the same rig as above. #:-? #What was happening was that the baits would be hit hard but the fish would drop the hooks. #On two occasions, the hits were so hard that the line over ran the reel and I had a couple of big bunches of grapes to sort out. #:(

This raises a question which I seek advice on please. #I have only had a bait-runner for a few months and have yet to learn all of its nuances.

Given that the hits on the floating bait-runner rig were so hard but unproductive, is this a situation where the bait-runner function is counter-productive? #That is, should I just rig the bait-runner for normal drag when I set out floaters for mackeral? #All advice gratefully received, thanks.

Anyway, I think that I have had my last night at Mud for a few months. #:D #Time to renew my relationship with sunscreen, fishing gloves, my Adaptacap, and long sleeve shirts. #8-) 8-)

Ah – Mud Island, I gave you
All the best nights of my life,
All the dreamy, sunny weekdays,
All the moonlit winter nights,
And though I never knew
The magic of making it with you,
That I thank the Lord for giving me
The little bit I knew,
And I was always just one step behind you.
(with apologies to songwriter Mac Davis) #;D ;D ;D

Oh well, #time to work the eastern bay in the mornings – a new fishing relationship begins… # :)

Gee, tomorrow morning is looking good! # :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

G'day
As for the floater, I leave the baitrunner drag engaged. May need to tighten it a little to stop an over spooling occuring on a high speed hit though. Once taking off, I gcount to 5 or 6 and then engage the main drag. This will set the hooks.

Nice report Charleville

As others have said mate...tighten that knob on the back a bit more. You still want them to take the bait but sounds like the rear drag is a little on the light side.

Give them a few seconds of zzz and turn that handle or flick that bar...Your on mate

Cheers

Thanks for your comments and advice, guys. :)

Hey Chief - I was out there this morning at about 8 am and looked around to see if I could recognise you but no luck. I did see one open tinnie leaving just as I got there and thought that it might have been you and called out "Is that you, Chief?" but I received a blank look from the occupant as he took off. Maybe all of the blue zinc cream all over my face scared him. ;D ;D ;D

A handful of boats there this morning. Received a regular saftey gear inspection from the police. Caught nought this morning but soon before I left there was a lot of surface activity but none would take pillies. A boat with three blokes casting slugs tried to attract some attention from the surface activity but they had no luck either.

Oh well, I shall try out there again tomorrow morning. It was a corker of a day.

Charleville,

Great story, although must admit I thought initially that it was in the wrong category or website for that matter...
Reading on proved worthwhile and I did enjoy the read.

Congrats on the new relationship.
As Kev said beware of rebound syndrome.

To misquote an old phrase... "It's a big old bay out there, and there are plenty of other fish in the Sea"...

Cheers,
Rich.

On the question of free spooling vs locked up when fishing for macks....

I usually fish with livies for macks, mostly with overheads and have tried freespool vs engaged and probably recommend having the reel in gear.

Most of the time the macks smash the bait and with the reel in freespool they tend to either maul it and drop it or get it down and bite off the hook (100lb leader!). With the reel in gear I still get plenty of dropped baits and bite offs but the hookup rate is definitely better. This seems to work ok in the event of a tuna or cobe picking up the bait as well.

So for my 2 cents worth - forget the baitrunner and fish with the reel in gear !!

Good luck on them.

Cheers,

GF
