Ventured out in the big northerly yesterday morning and found good flathead on the go almost everywhere I went from Isle of Capri bridge to the Broadwater. Connected with over 20, caught 14, released 9( one 78cm the rest low 40's and undersized), kept 5( needed a feed, its been a while). All were taken on soft plastics bar one that took a trolled hard body. Despite the wind it was one of the best sessions I have had for a while and I came home wearing a pretty big smile.
Cheers !!!, Pics to follow 8-)

is a gulp actually a plastic ? or is it an artificial bait
not saying you arent doing well on the flathead but I sometimes wonder about these gulp lures
compared to the good old plastic lures.

Vertico- not real sure mate. The way I use them is like a lure, I dont leave them sitting. Up until 5 weeks ago I had never used any soft plastics of any description so I am probably not that qualified to comment.

Hard bodies trolled or cast, will always account for their share of flathead. I only used hard bodies and traditional maribu style jigs( lead head and feather/ fibre tails, really good lures!!) with varying results usually has more to do with the tide and locations being fished and whether or not burley was also being used, with burley- dynamite but I wasn't targeting flathead). I have got a few prawn stars in my t- box that have been there for a long time and never given them a go, maybe next trip!

I used to get plenty of fish on lures up north but didn't target flathead, I was always chasing Barra, Fingermark, Salmon, Mackeral etc and got the odd flathead into the bargain when I was up the creek or out on the beach somewhere ( have caught a few flathead on wonder wobblers, big-t's etc using flat chat retrieves).

I know the boys around Rocky are now getting plenty of Barra on SP's including gulps where as we only got them on hard bodies when I was fishing for them( live bait was the go and luring was only usually done if the action was slow)

I'm pretty sure that if you used a plastics style jighead and correctly used an appropriate sized , freshly caught bait such as poddy mullet or herring on the jighead you would do pretty well if you used the same retrieve style etc(might have to test that theory down the track sometime). The tail motion on the gulps is pretty good though and I notice that if the tail is bitten off they do not get hit that often, Cheers !!
