View Full Version : A Giant What???????

After last weeks success on Jacks I decided to hit the spot again. Live bait was very scarce with only 1 pike
6 herring and 2 over size for bait mullet. Don't think they would even qualify as poddies......

The weather wasn't good with temp dropping sharply and the Nor easter picking up where the temp left off increasing to a harsh 15-20 knotter, never mind I was gettin out of the house - had a couple of coldies and some livies so who cares.

All was quiet with the pike drowning himself after 10 mins and winds increasing. not good but it was early.
Nothin, and more nothing and then some more nothing. My old mate Westie arrives with his super sized SP and laughs at my suicide technique. sit and wait and see what happens. By the time westies 2nd cast was in the water the little rod goes nuts with line peeling at a great rate, I nealy fell in the drink as I was that excited as it ran like a bit trevor that I'd caught there before. After about 40 seconds and 100m of line I finally turn the culpret and start making some ground. All was dark but I could hear the tail dancing and called it for a Giant Herring.

Westie was on the job, clearing rods and making room as the catch comes in range. As usual I didn't have a net so I grabbed the leader and tries to pull him up but alas the line broke, luckily the fish was buggerred and stalled for a minute while i got in and pulled him out.

The rest of the night was no better with the herring not lasting and a sea toad biting through one of the main lines that had the bigger mullet ans the other one just too big for the predators - should have taken them bulli fishing.

Never mind it was a peaceful night acouple of coldies and a weirder looking fish thatn westie..... and thats hard to beat.....

cheers
scotty

this one might be a better pic - huge scales on it but very fragile - fish bolted as soon as put back in water - wonder if you can eat these things? - probably good crab bait though?

Nice GH mate. How big were your big mullet? Youd be surprised what size baits a jack will hit. I like using baits from 15-25cm depending on spots. I dont do to much livebaiting anymore but these size baits scored me some good fish. The big cod dont mind the big mullet either.

Brightened the pic up a little to see it a bit better. Have only heard of them and not seen them. They fight pretty good do they? Something different I guess.

Thanks for those kind word MATE.

You forgot I was the one that stired the fish up so it could do the big suicide on you line.
It knew as soon as westie through the sp in he was a doomed. and ran as quick as he could and then when he saw your bait, thought is is my last feed and crabbed it.

NOW that is how it happened. To prove it I packed the rod away shortly after and no more bites

Fight similar to a trevor or mackeral with nowhere to hide.
Runs in the opposite direction on the hit and when you turn it - bolts sideways and always one or two runs just when you think you've got em. This was a small one but pulled like a freigh train - they alwats seems to grap the cheap rod rather than the one set up for the big hit and run - but thats fishing.

Yeah live bait (mullet) where around that size - the live herring and pike definately are a better option in this spot.

Westie - u are the grand master - I have tried to introduce you to the art of hurri curri fishing with a rumbo in one hand and torch in the other but you continue to make things hard for your self. I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks after all.

When's magic coming bulli fishing?

Nice try on the pic there mate - did you pick where the spot was? I made sure I wasn't giving too much away but if u look hard you can see a tree in the back ground. Next time your on the sunny coast let me know and I'll show u.
I am happy to share with ausfisho's, all u have to do is ask - I'm moving secret spots soon anyway, herd of a spot holding Milk fish so want to tick them off the list.....
