kick ass joel i hava been cleaning up alot there in the arvos, just use pellets thay are the gun bait there and you need a good flick rod to get your pellets out there and a reel with a good smooth drag (i know your combo kick but joel but im leting the ausfishers know) and you need good leaders (8-12lb) and good knots and it help to chuck a small hand full of pellet in to get them up then cast ontop of the boils and wait till u see you r line taking off and then hit them (but only when you see the line moving) ;D

it cost $30 for 3 hours $35 for 6 hours and $40 for the full day. i do think it is worth it, i would have to spend a lot more $$ to travel up north to catch them, and thay range in size from 43cm being the smallest i have seen and the biggest fish in the 120-125cm mark, so there is some big ones in there. there a monster in the mixed spieces pond with a tag in her back, her name is bazza and if you land her you get $1000 prize

you can take one home put you have to pay $18kg so a 45-47cm barra will set you back about $25 they are salt water too so they are yummy ;D

Never fished with pellets. So you just put one on a hook? Do you use weight to help with casting? If not, I suspect my baitcaster might be useless.

Can someone explain this method of fishing to someone who knows nothing?

I'm interested in taking my wife. She has never managed to hook a barra and this seems my best chance. I want to keep her interested so she is prepared to keep getting out and camping at some of the dams.

Thanks, Norm C

Norm C yer your right you don't use any sinkers, the pellets just float around on the surface and the barra come up n smash them, the guys there will explain how to do it they are really good usually. And yer you'l definitely need a light spin rod take the baitcaster for ya hardbodies, they hit those too, just not as often.
cheers dan

I visited the Barra Park in Townsville last Monday with my young fella (7 years) who had never caught a barra. He landed over 20 (we stopped counting) in an hour. All fish were caught on soft plastics with no bait or burley required. You can imagine he was pretty excited and can't wait to get back there. Its ideal for the kids because they don't get bored and are guarnteed a fish on just about every cast.

Enjoy and have a good Xmas

Rainman :)

not so lucky this time, the fish were coming up but being real selective in which pellet thay took, i only got 4 all arvo but my mate smashed em with his fly rod, he even got a 84cm out of big boys pond. it was cold and wet and i am spewing i did not get any livies as the people that did have them were getting run after run and busted off alot by some of the real big ones there. alot of barra were hooked but not to many fish landed if ya going to give it a try in the wet GET SOME LIVIES, YOU SHOULD CLEAN UP. ;)

Hey nuggstar, what is the story with the livies? Is it BYO, or do you get them there?

nuggstar
28-12-2006, 06:35 PM
byo on livies (mullet, hearing, small bream, silver biddys all work there) they don't sell live bait and you can not use a cast net there but you can bring all the livies you can carry

Was a nice little session but difficult due to the big crowd there. There wasn't a lot of elbow room and plenty of tangled lines. I managed three decent fish 45-55cm long in the smaller creek, which provided great fun on 4lb line. Brian got one in the smaller pond late in the arvo and a stonker in the big boys pond which went 79cm! Got lucky at the end, with the line breaking just as he beached the fish. Would love to try it again, but hopefully on a quieter day when there's a few less food sources to compete with ;)

I don't believe you! ;D I was winning on quantity til I left, now these magic two fish show up after the buzzer ::) Sounds suspect to me :P
Nah just kidding mate, good effort. I'll be working relief in a few weeks so if I get a day away from work I might have to head down there and get some practice in so I can bring in one of those big boys next time we're there.

went yesterday and the barra were verry hungry. i fished bigboys and got bust off after bust off (i spent more time rigging up than i did fishing) i did get one and it was 75cm using a mates 9wt flyrod. it did the best jumps i have eva seen, it jumped out at least 1m out of the water it was awsome maybe next time i will have more luck (my mate killed it with his fly rod, he got 5 over 70 cm and 2 over 80cm)
