I'm in the market for a mid 90's Pajero. Does anyone know of any faults or problems I should look for when buying one?

not sure if mods were made, but i had a 86 l300 4x4 van, had the same runing gear as a pajero, the gearbox was a mongrel thing for the nut to come undone that held the cluster together, so do not tow in 5th gear. if want more info pm me. I know of some horror stories around the 160000 km time. once fixed propely it seemed ok
cheers

Just for a matter of interest, get a price on the bolt that holds the bottom belt pulley on. The one that screws into the nose of the crank. I paid less for my last set of tyres. OK maybe not, but you get the idea.
If you still want one, I could give you a couple of phone numbers of people that own them and want to off load them for a good reason.
Then again, the classifieds are full of them, again for a good reason.

Blaze,
Does that involve the head? ;)
Cosmo,
In short, get a Cruiser if you can afford it, if not, a Patrol.
Just my humble opinion.
Cheers

Hi Jeff
The 160k problems are gearbox, forgot about the heads, if they get slightly over normal temp, pay to keep a spare one. they have no meat around the valves as the motor are maxed out on the valve porting and they do crack alot
cheers

ps had no diff problems

That's it Blaze,
Heard it was a given that the heads crack at around 160,000 +- 2000km, then unfortunately saw it happen on a mates car. :o
I think the replacement head they stick in is ok now, but ...... :-/
Cheers

i had one for 1 year and sold it ,limited wheel traval, weak gearbox and too many exterior limit and sensor switches on the gearbox...mine kept getting dirt and mud in them causing faulty readings on dash eg constant 4x4 flasing on dash really annoying.Had heaps of grunt though

I went on a 6 week tour around the Cape with bloke who was driving a Pajero. He reckons that a Pajero can go anywhere... as long as there is a Cruiser in front of it to pull it through.

dont be sorry Tony, im happy with my paj.. it was a cheap vehicle for my first vehicle, its nice n comfortable to drive in.. tows my boat alright and does the light offroad fine if ya take ur time and dont pretend its a tank.. ive got an 89 model 3 litre v6 pajero.. got a sports exhaust fitted which has made a difference because it pulls my boat up the local hill no problem while the neighbours 90 model pajero 3 litre v6 struggles and sounds like a fart in a purple bottle trying to escape

I've got a 93 NH - no probs with it. I did hear the previous model had gearbox probs though.
mine goes everywhere - I think its the driver.....
Check brake discs for warps before buying as well, towing buy a toy or Nissan

Can someone correct me here but didn't the 2000 model ones have issues with the standard recovery points on them twisting the chassis? i read this somewhere but can't remember where i saw it.
Might be wrong about the chassis they don't have one. that is why lots of fourby guys don't like em.

after the NH (after about 98?)series they got a monocoque chassis. This means they are just like a car body sitting on a lot frame. I have heard of these ones bending easily in towing situations.
After 1998 I reckon I would go with the prados or the pathfinders etc as mitsubishi made a big mistake taking the 4wd chassis away.
My mates got a 93 SWB for sale for about $14K but I'd go the LWB - just my opinion

Ahh that could be it then... i knew they had some issues with twisting. And no chassis would explain it.
I've heard of one guy getting snatched out correctly and it twisted so badly, it popped the windscreen out.

i know i posted here earlier, but its missing from here
anyways, my comment was, the early model pajeros have a weak gear.. the 5th gear to be exact, you dont use it unless already doing 80kmh and not going up or down slopes.. so flat land is preferred.. the 2nd gear can get sticky aswell

I have a 1985 NB 2.6l petrol Pajero Super Wagon (bought it new). Needed an engine rebuild at 150,000klms (excessive oil consumption) and a gear box rebuild (main bearing shit itself). Now it has now done 350,000klms and still going strongly (engine compression 120, 125, 125, 115psi). It uses about 1ltr oil every 7,000klms. Only problem I have at moment is rear springs are near flat.
I am very pleased withj my Paj and use it at least once per year to go fishing on Fraser Island. Other times it tows my boat around.
:) :)
