hi
Interested to know if anyone else has experienced overheating problem with the 6 cyl turbo diesel prado.
Whilst driving home along Freeway the temp gauge went thru the roof and the car started to overheat (within minutes).
Toyota tell me its a cracked head caused by the overheating however cannot explain why it would come on all of a sudden. Not towing the boat, not driving faster than normal and a reasonable cool day.
Toyota are still repairing it and say that they will help with the charges under warranty even though Prado is 2001 model. I have had it since new and it has 145000kms,They have had it now for 3 weeks.
Has anyone shared the same experience as I think Toyota might not be telling me the full story. I forgot my cost $3500.00 how much is Toyota contributing?

Wally.

Mr Hot Wally Prado. The problem with your vehicle is most likley a blocked raidator does the vehicle cool down when you stop and run the engine or does it cool down when you travel at a slower speed if so its probably the raidator. If you have water in the oil greish colour or you have rappid bubbles in the radiator its probabnly the head gasket. if it over heats when going slow it is probably a faulty raidator cap if you are building up pressure and blowing water hoses its probably the water pump, slipping fan belt or thermostat. Does that help you. I would go with the blocked raidator. Stan Kurts at Taree give fantastic deals on new Raidators don't know his phone number but even with the freight it would probably be cheaper than buying from your local guy.

Thanks
The problem I have is Toyota has looked and cannot find anything else amiss other than the cracked head. What caused it.Cracked heads just dont happen in my experience as you suggested radiators or belts or even timing however they have supposably checked all and found nothing.

It happened within minutes whilst driving normally

Thanks again
Wally

I am asking out of ignorance - are diesels more expensive than petrol motors to fix a cracked head. My daughter recently had her petrol 4 cyl done for about 2 grand total ??

well I just paid 1045.00 for a New cylinder head about 200 labour gasket and stuff would have been around 100-150 and its a 6 cylinder landcruiser. I actually rebuilt the whole engine for 3500.00 the above parts were included in the price. I can get an exchangewater cooled kombi engine for about 2,600. mechanice can be a bit on the steep side especially when they do work for a woman.
