We currently have a 3.0L Pajero, and are going on a 4WD trip in November, and thought we may change to the Hilux Surf (diesel). Does anyone know much about these monsters - I am getting mixed reports ...

I have to say that I am a biased toyota person, but..... I have heard a lot of mixed reports and comments about this particular vehicle, all I would be willing to say is, do your homework before committing.

good luck

Wouldnt give you two bob for a hilux. I think they are s---t boxes. Other toyota vehs are great. That is my opinion.
Hiluxs are light weight with rigid suspension and bounce all over the place.
Your choice

I don't know why so many are keen to jump on the band wagon to bash these things. They're really not that bad at all.

Provided you do the apropriate checks when buying one (mechanicals, body, rust).

I've had mine now for coming up on 12 months and with regular servicing and preventative maintenance (which any car should get) they will serve you well. I'm the first to admit i flog the shit out of mine in the bush, up rough tracks, and wound the boost up to double stock spec and its served me really well.
