Did anyone watch Getaway on channel 9 last night ?? Ben Dark was on fraser and as you do he bumped into some backpackers bogged , after laughing at them for awhile he then did something very very dangerous!!

He attached the snatchie to the rear bumper of his car on the passenger side outside edge with a double half hitch then attached it to the drivers side top of the bullbar and the vehicle that needed recovering again with a double half hitch.

This was unbelieveably dangerous and i was cringing the whole time did anyone else notice this?

Ian

I was very suprised channel nine put this footage to air. >:( >:( >:(

that would generally involve dynamite.

Did you see that episode when he cleared a track blocking a small 4x4 of a fallen tree - i couldn't breathe i was laughing so hard - trouble is i think we see a bit of coight in ourselves & our mates at times. We don't need to see it on tv that may be understood by some to be educational.

Maybe channel nine's next Getaway will go onto advanced methods of snatching attaching to towballs.

Yeh I saw it and had a bit of a laugh ;D ::) I rekon it was a set up anyway, you'd be hard pressed to find a bogged Landcruiser... surely? :-X ;D

Ok guys tip of the day if you hook the snatch strap to your tow bar and run it under the car you are pulling out and hook it to their tow bar when you pul them out the snatch lifts the bogged car up as well as towing it out of the bog hole. making the task much easier I have seen cars try to pull people out without sucess and this method that I discovered about ten years ago will work where other attenpts fail.

that would of course require the car (the boggee) to be pulled thru the bog by a vehicle that's already made it thru - a Landrover per se.

Bootyou - not trying to be smart, but how do you run a snatch strap under a bogged vehicle? And then how do you prevent it from abrading under full stretch under a vehicle with sharp points all the way under it, not to mention the thought of what an exhaust system would do to a nylon strap? Not trying to bag anyone, but a lot of people trying to get educated are reading these forums, and I don't want them holding us up on the tracks any more than they already do....

not trying to be smart because it doen't suit me but he did say "when other methods have failed"

Point taken, I am still verry wary of offering this as advice to those who might not know any better. This is not the reccomended use of a snatch strap and is potentially very dangerous.

The biggest causes of snatching failing to work are.

1 . incorrect placing of snatch strap on rated recovery points eg Ben Dark
2. poor quality snatch straps eg. brought from Bob Thorne and to low strength eg 2500kg. I like 9000kg straps
3. the driver of the recovery vehicle being a little to hesitant and not going for it.

I've never had a problem getting a vehicle out of a bog a few have had big boats attached to the back!!
I saw a jeep that was sunk to the floor pan and full of water to the windows revovered with a strong snatchie 10000kg and a rangie. The rangie was giving him self a run up and going for it ( fish tailing all over the place as the load came on) but he did get the vehicle out, if you could recover this jeep you can recover any vehicle just make sure the strap is up to it. ( Jeep was writen off anyway)

Saw the front half of a landie recovered once!! It was carrying quite a load and was stuck deep the recovery vechicle took off and out came the front, back moved just a little bit. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Seems landies bodys don't rust but there chasies do!!

If you have the time of the program send it to media watch.

I hate 4WD advertisements showing cars plunging into fast flowing rivers. STUPID!

I usually contact the manufacturers reminding them of liability if someone dies doing the same thing.

I have had some interesting replies and stopped a few major ad campaigns

This is a good thread,
What I would like is some further information or direction to a web site with the information.
How is correct/safe placement of snatch strap achieved.
What is the suggested gear for the vehicle being recoved.

I cringed when I saw Ben Dark do that too. I swear the bumper should have come off.
They would have shown that on national tv wouldn't they.

Hehe, never underestimate the ability of an idiot to bog a 4wd no matter how much it's worth.
