Work well at ripping you off and giving you nothing for it. There has been a post on these things before, but in the short, I've seen them tested on dyno's with no benefit.
Don't waste your money.

Corry,
i was thinking of installing one in my vehicle. What info do you have? I would be very interested.
Hope you don't mind me jumping in here whatto.
I have also heard they do nothing for petrol injected, but do give a good result for diesel and normally aspirated petrols.

Roz, I can only go off what I have seen. I'm sure there would be others that can give you actual readouts, but I was working in a mechanical shop with a Dyno when we tested them. It was on a V6 Commodore Ute, and I didn't even think of keeping the printouts at the time. I figured these things would be an overnight shot at fame and they would disappear. I didn't count on so many people getting lured into buying them.
I never got the chance to test them on diesels, but I'm not about to go out and put money into something that I have seen not make the claims already.
I know of a number of dyno outlets that have requested the use of one for trials, but I don't know of any who have been given one to actually trial. The one we had was purchased anonomously for our test, but there is a great legal system that says we are not allowed to publish what we think of these things, as you will find all the claims are stated as the benefit could be "up to" a certain amount. None of them give definates, and when you take them back, as I have seen people do, the sales side says that the benefits were in a different environment, or with a different set up.
I can't see how things would be different with N/A Petrol, or diesel compared to injected petrol. More myths I would think, the manufacturers wouldn't like to advertise this as all petrol engines these days are injected.

There was a report on these things on Today Tonight and or A Current Affair. The verdict was "Dont waste your money". These things are suposed to work by forcing the air to flow in a spiral through the manifold and carbie. The spiraling air flow is suposed to atomise the fuel droplets better than in a "normal" airflow. Concider how much turbulance is produced in the confines of the inlet manifold. This turbulance cant be changed without spending huge big dollars and to gain what? A far better idea is to only drive at night when the air is more dense and will have more oxygen in it because of the increased density. These things were shown to be a con on TV, spend your hard earned cash on some nice cold coffee.

I had one in my 1984 Landcruiser 45 series (2F petrol motor.) It did not do anything to improve its performance. They are a complete waste of time and money.

i have a mitsi L 200 express positioned in front of the huge air cleaner inside the canister is a plastic item which slightly resembels the turbofan of a jumbo jet this item is standard on my 18 year old beast and looks just like a hiclone without the ring around the outside it will create a swirling air current but as for xtra preformance i find it hard to belive save your money and spend it on fuel

They convinced me to buy TWO for my Rav4, a dual setup or something. BIIIG waste of money. And I cut my finger putting them in ....... >:(
I've had some thoughts about Hiclones too. We bought an 80 series cruiser last year that had two hiclones fitted. it's a naturally aspirated 1HZ engine with extractors. I have no idea if it has increased the power or fuel economy from original as it was in the vehicle prior to our purchase, but we're getting good mileage from our car. Towed a trailer full of camping gear with builders box on top, 5 person family all the way inland down to Sydney and back up the coast. We averaged about 7Km per litre for 5000 Km and over some pretty bloody hilly country toward Toowoomba, Blue Mountains and down around Armidale area too. Here's a couple of sites you might find interesting. Obviously the first one is just good advertising by Hiclone manufacturers. There's some interesting data in there too if you scroll through.
