Jumping out of gear

I have an '85 Jackaroo. Driving on the beach in H4 no problems until I hit a bigger bump then it bounces out of H4 to H2. but L4 stays in gear no matter what I hit :) Any idea's ??

Bungie I know of an FJ40 that used to do the same, it was fixed with a transfer case overhaul. A problem with detent ball bearing or something (I cannot remember exactly) but it was a fairly cheap fix in parts overall from memory.

Should be a few of those units at the wreckers by now?

My cousin had a similar problem when he sheared his gearbox mount bolts.... His gearbox had twisted slightly and was resting on the selector unit. Everytime he hit a bigish bump itd drop out of 4WD
