toymod is spot on, may be a little slow but shouldnt have any problems assuming everything is ok and in good working order. The swap would definitely not be worth the effort as it would be easier and cheaper to sell yours and buy a diesel which would most likely be slower again.

G’day Danny and all Ausfishers

Whilst your Jackaroo would have the power to tow your proposed boat, there are a few things which you need to consider; the legal and the mechanical aspects.

Legally, a 1995 Jackaroo 3 litre V6 towing a trailer is allowed to have a gross combination mass of 5100 kg. That is vehicle, weight of passengers, load of vehicle, total weight of the trailer and its load. Check out "redbookasiapacific.com/au/" and look at specifications in the used vehicles sections.

Mechanically, since becoming an Ausfish member and following most of the threads on this chat board, I have become aware of the frailty of 5speed manual gear boxes of the medium sized 4x4s. I own a Triton V6 dual cab 4x4 – hence my interest. The design of the gear box is not meant for towing, and if used for towing heavy weights should only tow in 4th gear not overdrive or 5th. I have heard of Hiluxes, and Tritons having gearbox troubles, and believe that the Jackaroos and Rodeo family would more than likely experience the same problems. If yours is an automatic, there should not be any problems. However, my mechanic – thirty years + experience also informs me that he has a client who uses a Jackaroo for towing a boat and it really chews the petrol when towing even on the highway. He has to refuel even before completing a 300km towing trip.

I am not trying to steal your dream. Just my 2c worth.

Tight lines

Danny, got a 1999 Jackaroo, petrol 3l, auto and tow a 19 Allison Vision - tows fine but chews up a bit of juice - 50 litres from southside brisbane (algester) to Mooloolaba and back. Mine doesn't feel "weak " pulling itself so maybe yours needs to be looked at.

Got a 99 Jackaroo SE 3.0l turbo diesel Manual.(economy 6km/litre pulling boat)
Tow a 575 outsider with 135 HP even in 5th gear
Excellent power (better than the Pajero 3.0l petrol Auto, economy 4km/litre pulling boat)
Does have a heat problem which is getting worse but I think that is the radiator getting a blockage
