We bought a '91 Pajero from a corner car yard about 18 months ago.... no problems so far.
I took it to a Mitsubishi service centre for a diagnostic test just after we bought it. When they put the vehicle ID number into their computer it showed there'd been a recall on the crank pully bolt in our model, so that was replaced free under warrenty while I was there.
So if you don't know where it's been serviced during it's previous life, I highly recommend taking it to a Mitsubishi service centre.

I got a 96 model, owned since new, the car has been excellent. The only thing to give me trouble was the idle solenoid, which we replaced.
I have run Shell optimax in it since new 8-) and I service her every 5000klm. The only time she has been to a Shop was to have the Timing belt, plugs and water pump done at 100,000klm. otherwise I do evrything else. Just get one of those aftermarket manuals from super cheap.
cheers

I've got a 96 model 3.5L Auto. The waterpump got replaced just after I bought it. Is that a common pajero problem?
Anyway It's great on the beach and good for towing my 15ft boat. The only thing is that it is a bit heavy on the juice.

The water pump is pretty common. Most people suggest replacing them at the same time as the timing belt as there is only a very small amount of extra labour. Ive heard of water pumps failing and then inturn damaging the timing belt and then causing problems with the motor. I beleive that the 3.0L is tollerent of a broken belt but the 3.5L gets internal damage.
There was the crank pulley bolt re-call as mentioned above and i think there was a front brake hose recall too
I had a 94 NJ V6 manual for 4 years/130 000km and sold it with around 300K on it.

I had a 92 auto for about three years. 1 drop of rain and just pop it into all wheel and back when the road is dry. Over heating was a bit of a problem on a soft beach at low speeds but if you kept to hard sand it was cool. It didn't mind Fraser 1 bit.
Had to replace a thermostat once and that was all.
Used it to tow the 5.2M fibreglass but when I went to the 5.75m Outsider, it struggled more
Motor was 3.0l petrol and heavy on fuel 6 km/l around town and 4 towing the boat
Things also started to grind so let it go at nearly 300,000
I changed to a 99 Jackaroo SE 3.0 l turbo diesel and have not looked back. 9 km/l and 6 towing.

I still have a 94 Pajero, with 293 000 klms on the clock. Still going strong, will keep it for another year or so till timing belt and water pump are due again.
293 000 klms, original motor with only normal service and repairs and with no serious breakdowns...
any more need to be said?
Not a bad vehicle overall, would pay to do waterpump when replacing the timing belt and also idler and tensioner as these can fail if they get water or dust in them over time. Also when having the timing belt replaced make sure the crank bolt is replaced every time, they are a strech bolt and do exactly that when tightened and they will come loose and destroy the balancer, timing belt sprocket and crank angle sensor.
Also have seen a few V6 ones in particular where the rear diffs get noisy, specially with heavy towing over long distances (eg touring with caravan) .
Other than that I personally haven't come across anything else worth noting thats not considered to be normal wear and tear so get it checked out by someone you trust, keep the services up to it and I'm sure that you'll make a great team.

Idle speed control motors are common faults as are engine ECU's. I used to be a Mitsubishi foreman and saw a lot of water pumps, ecu's, isc motors and also transformers for ignition coils, but still think they are a good 4x4. Didn't like the torsion bar fron suspension, limited ground clearance and poor turning circle.
