I have just been through this auction path.
In the end it doesnt work out any cheaper than buying one through a decent car yard.
Add up all the fees and taxes and the fact you cant really inspect the car or test drive it, its really just not worth it.
You have to remember that anything worth buying is going to be picked up by the car yards anyway, so your competeing with them.

Chemmy - PM's not working at the moment.... ?
Anyway - My cousin is selling his 40 series landcruiser. He's recently pulled the motor out and put in an overhauled 3B motor (That's the 4 cylinder diesels). The truck is really economical now, and goes really well. I think he is also possibly puting a turbo on it (These motors have no problems with turbos).
Anyway, it's for sale for about $2000, and comes with another 40 series for spares. So you get 1.5 landcruisers for 2K! :D
On my website if you go to the 4WD section, and look at the Lansborough trip, or the video "John's Climb" it's the 40 series with the green stripe down it (White truck).
It's a lot less than you were thinking of spending, but will give you a tuff truck, and heaps of money left over!

chemmy,
go to the aution section in saturdays paper.
there is some at eagle farm by memory.
some good 4wds to be had at good prices
just go over them with a fine tooth comb.
and the car dealers cant get them because they
are public auctions not dealers.

there you go.
navigate down the left hand side and you'll find Aucton Houses. Click on Eagle farm and Springwood
Good luck :)
