Looking at buying a 02/04 Navara with the 3lt turbo Diesel engine. Any thoughts or experiences either good or bad would be appreciated.

I have the 2002 Dual cab 3ltr T.

Must agree with Scotty. Had it for about 2 years now and no trouble at all. 110kw, nuff torque, LSD's, great gear ratio's, and economical.

This model really took it to Toyota's Hi Lux's in way of performance, price, reliability and looks.

Do yourself a favour, have a test drive !

Cheers Phill

I've had the 02 model 3.0TD dual cab for about 6 months now- best 4WD ute I've owned, (and I've had two hiluxes, a Cruiser and a Rodeo). Great all rounder. Used during the week as a trade ute, on the weekends it does everything from take the kids to soccer, tow the boat about 80k to the nearest fishing spot (4WD launching no probs), plus occassional bush bashing and beach work. I've taken it on two 20hr return trips since I've had it - one with a loaded trailer one without.

I did a lot of research before handing over $33K and I couldn't find a better ute in it's class. You can do a lot! worse

I've had the 2003 model for about 6 months now. The only thing I have had to have fixed other than the oil change in that time is a grease of the steering stops to prevent some creaking noises at full lock.

Other than that I am looking forward to swapping the standard bridgestone tyres that came with it, but they still have a fair bit of tread left. I can't afford new ones at the moment but these ones seam a little slippery in wet conditions for me. It does have a tendancy to wag its tail in the wet. I have seen a few other Navara with Wrangler ATR and they look pretty good.

Cheers

Hey Lazy, you may also want to consider Bridgestone Dueller AT's. I've got them on mine and they hang on pretty well.

I've had them before on other vehicles too and they have always been pretty good value.

Carefull with the recko on Goodyear Wranglers, I have a set on my Nissan Terrano and are now due for replacement at about 50,000ks. They have been an ok sort of tyre but I have never been happy with them on wet bituman, this is backed up with a "big tyre comparo" done by 4wd Monthly a year or so back who found the same thing. Prior to this I had Bridgestone Dualar A/Ts and got even less miles but had good grip. ;)

Snap,

I have just bought a 2003 STI Turbo Diesel 03 model. Pick it up Monday next week. I did a lot of internet surfing and talked to a heel of a lot of people regarding this vehicle and it came out on top over all of its competitors. I paid $28000 and it has 60000kms on the clock. Good buying me thinks. I will stop by your place on the way home monday for you to take it for a run if you want.

Regards,

Foggy

Ive had my t/d 03 model Navara single cab now for 22ooo ks. No problems and it tows my 1.9tonne Kevlacat well. Its only shortfall is that first gear is sometimes a bit tall when starting off with the boat behind ie stopped at a red light on a small/medium slop hill. I get around this by using low range so its not to much of a hassle. If your boat is less than 1,5 tonne you should have not probs at all.
Once I get out of first with the boat behind its clean sailin. She hauls well in 2/3/4 gears and I can cruise easily at 95kmh on the highway. Could go faster but not safe. When not towin she get 600-650km tank easily. When towin with the turbo workin full belt expect to loose at least a quarter/third in milage ie down to 400 odd km to a tank.
The new model in the dual cabs (dont know re the single cab) has solved the gear prob by the new 6 speed box. It has a much lower first for gettin goin.
Hope this helps Cheers
