Hi all, my new boat arrives in a week and i now need a new 4x4 to two her. looking at pajero, cherokee, challenger or jackaroo. My question is am i better to go with a newer car with higher k's or an older car with less k's, also any known problems with the models listed. Will mainly be for everyday driving and towing the boat, may do the odd beach camping trip. Any help is grealtly appreciated. Looking at 1997 to 2000 and between $10,000 and $15,000

Thanx Jim

its a bit like how long is a bit of string!!!
if u go for low ks it will be more expensive high ks reduce the available usage left in it.
Therefore i suggest you need to decide how many ks you will do in it,how long you intend to keep it,will it require repaires etc during the time you have it,because of high ks.does the resale value matter(if you intend to keep it for a long time it will negate any advantage of buying one with low kays. on the other hand if you will be doin lots of kays in a short time you will need a vehicle capable of clockin up those mi;les.
See wat i mean ive said a lot but it means nothing :o :o :o
Secondly the choice of vechicle is a personal thing there will always be varying arguements as to the pros and cons of every vehicle.
Final result?????? beats the S**t out of me, who knows????????

i would recommend a 80 seriers cruiser with a 1hz or a 1hdfe if ur really lucky. With 15G's u might be able to pick up a fairly low k clean example.

Ryan you would be dam lucky to pick a clean 80 diesel up for that price. I got a 96 DX 1 year ago. very clean unit no rust a few extras but 270thou on the clock. I was happy paying 18 for it!!

I agree with Jimbamb mate, although for the age of truck your looking for you will find it hard getting one even with high ks on it for that price (clean no rust).. oh by the way the changllers arn't real good on the beach, they have some sorta traction control (maybe model dependant) that bogs them down in the soft stuff unless your hell for leather through it.. outa your list of makes my fav would be the cherokee or pajero. if your after some more info on any Jeep goto- www.ausjeepoffroad.com.au

Cheers

PS: www.outerlimits4x4.com is a great 4x4 site too ;)

It's a trade off.....an older vehicle is just a dent in your ego, a higher km vehicle could be a dent in your wallet.

It's a bit hard to really make the decision based on k's alone. I have seen several good second hand cars with higher k's that would mechanically be in better condition than other cars with lower k's. I think service history is more important than difference in k's and be sure to have whatever rig you buy inspected inside and out by a trusted mechanic who knows the vehicles well.

Older cars with low k's could also mean less servicing and more brittle components than one with more servicing.. just something to keep in mind

80 series diesel cruiser and forget about how many K's they will just go one for yonks, but if you can find one that has had regular services it will be a bonus, I have seen them with well over 500,000 and still going, and indeed have heard (but not seen) of one with 820,000 still same engine and clutch etc.

I think you should be going for an older car with less miles for 10k to 15k.
You will pick up a very nice low mile late 90's XJ Cherokee for that sort of money. It will have no trouble towing the boat. You would even have enough left over to do a gas conversion for cheaper running costs.
Trans and engines are good for around the 300k mark.

Remember your parts cost to when buying your unit as Jeep parts can be a bit exe!! I'd look at a cruiser mate a diesel one to for better torque. Parts are reasonable and easily accesible.
For $20,000 I just bought a 2002 Hyundai Terracan with 70,000 kms and 1.5 years of Factory warranty. A change of interior from my 4x4 experiences in me FJ45 Cruiser.

I am also looking to buy 2nd hand 4x4 and was thinking to try the Jeep Cherokee... maybe 96 97 model was more in my price range.
I was wondering how they would go on soft sand, as someone did mention the traction control of the challenger could be a hassell. I believe the Jeep has all time 4 wheel drive and I think it changes the traction automatically to get the best out of the situation.

Grand Cherokee will come with Quadratrac/Quadratrac II.
Cherokee will have transferable 4x4.
They go good in the sand with good clearance and are lighter then the big wagons. With small lift can run 31's and will go more places then most 4x4's.
Parts are easily obtained from aftermarket sources, just need to know where to look.
Pick up a copy of Jeep Action Australia.

www.ausjeepoffroad.com.au is a good forum too!! Jimmy B nearly talked me into a jeep ;) If i was to get one I would be loking at the late 96-98 models too as the dash changed about then. the standard cherokee would drag a little in very soft sand but should pull through quite well. don't forget with the jeeps that if you want an auto petrol is your only option and if you want manual then a 4 cyl TD is your only option!! bit strange...

Anyways good luck!!

I had a Cherokee from about 93 to 2000. It was superb on the sand. Also handled the Simpson with ease.

Something to think about is the type of driving a car has done. Ie i would rather purchase a car with 110,00km of mostly highway/country driving than one with 80,000km of stop/start city driving. This especially applies if you are considering purchasing a diesel.
