Have been shopping around for some quotes on a tow bar for a new Toyota Rav 4. All the toyota dealers I contacted quoted me from $600 to $850 for a heavy duty towbar. I contacted a local reputable private installer and after some research into any possible problems being the new model his quote was $390. I'm undecided whether to go with the dealers and not have warrenty problems or go the cheaper alternative.

I've got a guy down here on the gold coast that will give you great deal on Hayman Reece towbar & back it if anything goes wrong which i higher doubt..
tho if you are willing to get ripped off by a dealership that will not always repair it without fight go that way..

Go the cheaper way they all must meat Aus standards :) I was quoted $600 for a towbar for the Outlander from Mitsubishi >:( local muffler and towbar shop did same for $280 :-/ the diference of $320 buys a lot of beer and fuel ;D ;D ;D ;D

Saint, Griz- I'm starting to think the cheaper alternative is the way to go. I will never forget the time I bought a brand new ute, I got the dealer to put a ute liner in it for $600 I went to a large manufacturer of ute canopies to have one fitted to the new ute and low and behold he had the ute liner there for $300 fitted and they supplied the liner to the big dealers who wacked 100% on top.

Agree 100% with you there griz, thats what the standards are for. Cheap doesn't always mean nasty, they all must comply with the Australian Design Rules and have been properly tested etc. Should have a stamp or sticker on it stating it complies. Just make sure that it is properly rated for what you want to tow, and putting it on a Rav 4, I can't imagine you are going to be towing a 30ft cabin cruiser. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Cheers ;) ;) ;) ;)
