Managed to get the week off after New Years and with the weather forecast to be pretty poor in SE QLD and alot better in Northern NSW we quickly went for a fish down at Evans Head. Headed out Thursday morning to an area i thought would be good to troll for Billys. 5 minutes into the troll we had a 3 way hook up on Wahoo and soon lost a Pakula. I put the pushers away and put on the hard bodys and I'm glad i did as we had 2-3 and 4 way hook ups on wahoo in a very short period of time. We couldn't fish long as the big tides were going to make the bar pretty messy so we headed in early to avoid any problems. Glad we did as the run out tide was pretty scary and there was bugger all water but still not that much of a problem in the end. Friday morning the swell had picked up and the bar was a shocker. We waited till almost the top of the tide and took our time sitting at the bar waiting for a break. We got a nice break and headed out the bar to the same area as the morning before. The conditions were pretty crappy but still fishable and we soon found the wahoo in numbers again giving us some fun and keeping us amused. Once again we had limited time and headed back to bar where we found it looking very messy. The swell was big and very close togethor and once we come in on the back of one we realized there was next to no water and after some heart thumping moments and a split second sand touch we were safely in. We kept 12 wahoo and must have hooked 20-25 easily which made for some good fun even though we got bugger all fishing time in. Was good to go back to Evans Head as it had been 15 years since we last fished there.

I have put some footage togethor of the action which i put into the video section http://www.ausfish.com.au/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1168166613

Some nice fish there. I was at Evans on Friday and stood and watched as some boats went out. Unfortunately I left my boat at home, however, will be back down that way on Wednesday chasing something similar. I dont expect for you tell me where you got them, however, can you inform if you saw the FAD in your travels. I've been told one of the pros hooked it up and tragged it further north again. Probably the same pro that fished the black for 30 years and was chased out of Tweed and can now be seen walking the footpaths of Evans.

Hey Greg,

Nice haul of wahoo. Sounds like it was mayhem by the amount of hookups over the period of time. Good on you for getting out. I'm still waiting on the weather so I can crack the tyrnos out on somethin big. Thanks for sharing mate.

Regards,
Craig.

"We kept 12 wahoo..."

12 wahoo is perfectly within the legal bag limit for the species which is 10 per person. in my view it isn't that different from taking 15 nice snapper from the banks which happens very regularly.

ps. great catch reef master :o :o

bballfisho the bag limit in nsw is a in posession limit of five wahoo per day which the boys seemed to slide just under, which i agrree no one should be upset with that as they are only very tiny wahoo to start the season and you have to keep enough to offset the costs of a trips expense these days aswell as one such as this when travelling well away from home as these guys have those wahoo only turn into a few kilo of fillets each once filleted, skinned and de-boned making it split between three families a very justifiable catch.

Beauty,
All court in God's country #:)
Any hints of local??? :-/
What's the boats name/type??
Can't remember peoples names but remember boats. Go figure??
We didn't go out much when I was down. Gonads aren't big enough for the bar sometimes.
Mind you fishing in the river can be just as dangerous with the holiday warriors :-/
:)
