I work in an ISP and we do Broadband for Business - which is higher grade (and cost) than retail plans. some of our engineers wanted the best value at home, so rather than pay the higher cost for our own service, they found www.datafast.net.au - there is some good deals there if you are looking.

I'm on Optus for $54.95 a month which gives me 550MB download, and I have never come close to using that.

I also don't burn CD's or Videos.

No line rental on this and no dial up, which allows me to only have 1 phone line comming into the house for ph calls. And that is $25 a month line rental with the first 100 local calls free.

Was a 1 off install fee of $159, modem included in that price and a $30 rebate on that if you go direct debit for payments.

i went optus cable 4 yrs ago, my mate went telstra, he found the speed was capped at around 480k where optus delivers 832k depends if you really need the speed, he got out of the telstra contract over that with some help from his solicitor father inlaw, bear in mind though you will always hit a slow server somewhere that is slower then having a 56k dial up. All in all though imho you cant beat cable.

I've had optus cable for quite a while now, ever since it was first put into the street. I was pretty pleased with it until a week ago when they imposed a new 3 Gig limit on us. I have 2 sons , 20 (who,s a computer geek) and a 16 yo. They managed to use up the 3 Gig limit in 2 weeks and since then we've been putting up with a 28.8 kb service which is that slow you can boil the jug while this bulliten board is loading up, and will have to until the 1st of next month. I'm seriously considering taking my business elsewhere, to some-one who won't change the rules mid stream.

I install broadband from the telephone exchange right through to the customers end for a living. I don't do cable-I do adsl which basically uses an existing line and splits it using a filter so the same pair of copper wires can be used for phone and data at the same time. Cable is probably better price wise BUT if you have a high user rate in your area you will find ADSL is a better performer as you are using a dedicated line and you pay for the speed you want remembering ISP's won't guarantee speeds past their server. Having said all this unless I was able get something back on tax I would stick with a dial up and put up with the slower speed which is what I do. If I had to pick I'd take cable for the price. My opinion anyway.
Ps If you are a TV junkie it might be worth waiting till mid year to get PayTV as Optus/Telstra merge have come up with ??? channels of digital content. I won't put the number of channels up as what they say and what they do could be two different things but from what I've heard it will be a lot.

Highest speed for ADSL with us is 1.5meg download and 256k upload but talking bucks for home.
There are faster options then ADSL and cable but then you are talking serious money.

Just spoke to a mate who installs ADSL but has cable at home. As there isn't a high uptake of cable at present he informs me that the speed of cable is
consistently better than ADSL and he thinks cable is a more reliable product. Also might be worth looking at iinet.net good prices at the moment.
