TWO people died and nine others were taken to hospital in the southern Philippines after two families ate poisonous puffer fish, police said today.
A fisherman's wife succumbed to poisoning in the city of Dapitan and a boy also died near the town of Aloran, both on Mindanao island on Wednesday, police reports here said.
Nine other members of the two families were taken to hospital to treat severe stomach pains and vomiting.
The boy's family had bought the fish from the local market. Puffer, or blowfish, is considered a delicacy in Japan and certain parts of the Philippines.
The fish's liver contains the poison tetrodotoxin, for which there is no known antidote.
Japan has licensed puffer cooks at finer restaurants who are specially trained in preparing the fish safely for human consumption.
