View Full Version : Stolen Crab Pots

A mate and I learnt a lesson in stupidity today by leaving our pots in a creek for a few days and checking them after work each day. We were pretty sure someone had checked them the day before (either Sunday night or Monday morning) as we had only Jennies and one pot had 'moved'.
We rebaited them and came back this arvo only to discover two had gone and a third one had been broken into with the top hook cut open.
This is the first time I've ever done anything like this and straight up I've been shafted. I'd love to get my hands on the #$@%#@ who think this sort of thing is OK. Man that s**ts me.
Aaaahh I feel much better now. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Mate it's even worse when you catch them in the act and realise that a few crabs aren't worth getting hurt over. (plus the guy I was with was already on probation for violence >:( )

It really does take the fun and rewards out of crabbing. It's so bad now days that I don't even bother...

Same stuff different day.
Heard this one a million times before.
Sorry to hear, but you need to gaurd them with a gun if you want to keep them.
Cheers Kev.

My ol man was fishin the bay one day, when some crazy dude motored up holding a shotgun and started raving about people stealing crab pots, its one of those things really there will always be scum around that think they are entitled to free crabs.

Yeah i've had it happen a couple of times before, i've even had the netting on the pots slashed.

AS you said Marcus_D what happens when you catch up with them? You never know who you're dealing with and what they have with them in the boat!

Sorry to hear about that daintree boy, but as some of the other guys have said, you have to be careful as you don't know who you're dealing with.

My oldest son and I pulled alongside a guy that was emptying one of our pots in the Pine River only to be met by two other guys coming out of his cabin. They were built like brick dunnies and grogged up to the eyeballs. I was just about fearing the worst when the prick hauling the pot fell overboard! Worth losing a pot and a great laugh to round off the day.

The Pine River is really bad for "raiders" and nowadays I only use my "pro" pots when I am anchored in view. Elsewhere, I use the 7 buck ones that I don't mind losing now and again.

Anyone launching at deepwater bend on the pine river should be aware that the ferals have now stooped to even lower depths. They're actually removing rollers and winches from trailers. I get my missus to launch me in the morning and then take the trailer home, as I live locally.

Hope it doesn't get any worse on the fishing scene as we've now taken to launching at Rudy Maas since our trailers were "lightened" at jacob's Well. Amazing how guys have the balls to do stuff like that at such a busy ramp!

Good luck with hanging on to your remaining pots

Well the good news is we got the pots back!! The idiot kept rebaiting them and setting them in the same stretch of water. Anyway he's been reported to the relevant authorities and we have our gear back. I can only imagine he does this often as it was so blatant and he kept going back to the same area to reset them, the hide >:(

Try putting a brick in the bottom of the pot and sewing a couple of black Gamakasu hooks about half way up the rope.

They pull them up and get a nasty surprise. This was done up a Bundy a few years back with a very effective result

Honest? They were stealing his crabs!

Not that you'd knock a $50 note, at least they gave some quality remuneration.

yeh but it was the unwritten rule going back some years now that if you wanted a feed of muddies but didn't have the trap the old six pack was the excange for one
$50 ??? well i would think that would more than cover a few ;D

i know i would be just as happy to put a pot up with $50 than one with a few muddies ;D

I get my pots robbed all the time by the bloody kids I teach and they tell meabout it on monday and there is nothing I can do. They laugh I get cranky but at least it gives me a reason to put them back out again.

I have started sinking pots lately using a brick and about 4 metres of rope attached to the pot. Drag the brick out from the pot then use a reef anchor to pull them in. GPS is usful but I only do this in creeks without a lot of run. I know guys who have made gant pots like about 3 mtres long by about 2 metres wide and sink them permanetly this way with about 3 chickens for bait.

This is the only way to ensure a feed sometimes how sad it is

Anyone around the pin should get over it, I can remember stolen or raided pots being an issue back in the 70's. When you go to the trouble of going up creeks and drains in very light traffic areas or spots inaccessable at low tide & then still get beaten to the crabs really shits me. I've just loaned 8 pots to a mate to take on hols with, 4 have never hit the water. Wont tell you where he's gone incase the share farmers look at this site too!

The mate I loaned the pots to just got back and brought me a nice muddy. Only put 4 pots out twice due to weather and too scared to leave them out overnight, for 20 crabs. Who wants to know where he went.

Saw a pro fisherman in a 25ft plate mono hull Tbone a couple of young blokes side on in a 17ft SeaFairer out from fisherman Island once for pulling his pots. The Oar battle that raged afterwards was Quite a spectical while whiting fishing. Alot of damage and sore heads for a couple of sandies. Maybe they thought twice the next time a lonely float presented itself.

Just wondering what is the pin? :-/

Aaron_Fogarty
03-12-2004, 08:56 AM
Jumpin pin bar, a stretch of water between North and South Stradbroke Island, Brisbane. Blokes usually mention the "pin" as being all the sheltered waterways inside this bar and the northern end of south Stradbroke Island.
Hope this helps
