View Full Version : "Grazier" Wreck?

My mate was talking to his father-in-law over the weekend, an old salt who has lived on Straddie for many, many years.

He'd mentioned a wreck in 5m NE of Mud - I think he said it was a prawn trawler named "Grazier". Anyone ever heard of this? I had a look in b2b, but couldn't find it.

Pretty sure that I have read somewhere that the grazier was salvaged.

A great start. Thanks guys.

If anyone has some GPS marks I'd really appreciate a PM. The story is basically that the old fella used to fish there as a young lad in a wooden boat and used to row there (gotta admire these guys). He considered this to be *his* spot in the 50's. He positioned himself the old-fashioned way by land based bearings, but his memory is now a bit hazy, and of course a lot of the landscape has changed.

We'd love to take him there, more as a nostalgia trip then anything, but it would be great if he could wet a line there; back at *his* spot after so many years...

Thanks again,
Mike

Mike - could it be this one ??(see attached) - it a fair way from Mud though - there should be enough landmarks left for the old fella to recognize if this is the one - PM me if you take him - like to know - MalM

PS maybe we should drop a flagged bouy on it with bells, lights & whistles- that'll make the sealed-lippers & gang-plankers really happy ;D ;D

Thanks mate,

No I doubt that would be the one - his memory isn't *that* hazy and I doubt he would have been rowing from the Brisbane River to Scarborough. Do you mind me asking where you got your info from? It would surely be a big coincidence to have 2 wrecks in the bay with the same name???

LOL about the "sealed-lippers", but I actually understand where they're coming from. However, as I've said, this is a nostalgia trip for the old bloke rather than a full-on fishing assault.

Or perhaps it's an elaborate ruse to illicit GPS marks from Ausfishers? :-)

My next attempt would have to be a doozy : ;)-)

Thanks again guys. [smiley=thumbsup.gif] [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Goiod luck,
Mike

Thanks Webby & Westie.

I'll print this out and show it to old Terry - see if it matches his recollection.

Thanks again for the time and effort.

It's like the "Bazil Noonan" thread all over again :-)

The two marks are hardly more than a couple of bumps now because it has nearly silted over & I was told it had broken in half(due to impact? age? :-/) hence the two marks & the two remaining bits are all that is left protruding perhaps a bit of bow & stern. Touchy><>

Makes sense Touchy, since she seems to have gone down in the '40's. Thanks for the info mate.

Had a few bitches sent to me regarding the gps marks I posted re the Grazier.
Firstly there's only one Grazier wreck in the bay, although there's plenty of other wrecks.
Secondly giving away the revelant marks, means nothing, thought even man and his dog new where the Grazier and Neilsen were.
Thirdly knowing where it is doesnt mean to say you'll no what to do when you get there, meaning tides/right moon and more specificially the right time to fish this area.
Fourthly there's a lot more better structure around Mud then the Grazier, as its vertuially just a bump on the floor these days.

Sometimes I wonder why we try to help our Ausfish family out, :-? when someone has to bitch about answering a question.

I am pulling up my pants and getting out of this one, so no one misinterprets my intentions, when someone asks for some help on a topic and starts to sent me Bitching Mail.

Sorry Westie

Westie,

although we don't speak often I know you as a great help and an even better sense of humour.........that doesn't mean let your pants fall down either!!!! :P

I asked for gps plots when I first got on ausfish and I never expected the response I got, the plots where great and even if they had of been a bit out I would have been thankful all the same!

Stop your whinning who ever you are, you are giving girls a bad name!!!!!

As the originator of this thread, I'd like to once more thank Webby and Westie for the marks (as well as the people who PM'd and others who tried to help). I'd also like to apologise for any flak you've copped in helping out a fellow Ausfisher.

If any of the delicate souls who have a problem with this would like to redirect their ire towards me, feel free. If it's justified at all (which I don't believe it is), surely I should be the one copping it?

As has been pointed out, this particular wreck appears very well known, and it's entirely possible that I could have obtained the information I was after from elsewhere within the public domain. However, I didn't realise that Ausfish ettiquette requires us to pursue every other avenue of information before posting a question here.

I don't really see how this is much different to asking for marks for say, Curtin Reef or the Tangalooma wrecks. It's not as if I've demanded everyone relinquish their prized spot x's.

Anyway, like I say, if anyone would like to point out the error of my ways, pop me a PM and leave your more helpful fellow Ausfishers in peace. Before you do though, ask yourself this: has every single mark in your GPS unit been "discovered" by you? Also, if you "discovered" the wreck yourself, how did you poisitively identify it as the Grazier?

I may be disappointed by some Ausfishers reactions to this and I may think twice before asking a question here again, but I certainly won't hesitate in helping if I can answer one.

Good luck,
Mike

Mike dont be put off by a minority mate, you had a genuine reason for asking and you were not asking for there spot x's mate.

Bugger them , the wreck is well known ,as well as curtain is so treat it as water off a ducks back matey.

I'm sure Brain has.

As for me, i'm a scrawny little 90 kilo bloke, but if they pmd me having a whinge, i would tell them to go get , (well you know the rest lmao.)

In case anyone's still interested, I was out on Saturday and decided to have a look at these marks (without the old fella on this occasion). They can't be more then 60-80 meteres away from some of my own marks.

I've now renamed them in my GPS as "Coles Carpark" 1 & 2. I couldn't get within cooee of them. Popular spots, and certainly not amongst Moreton Bay's hidden secrets, eh? :-)

Good luck,
Mike

"Us Brisbane Ausfishers have a paddock with dozens of cows in it. The wonder of it is that no matter how big the paddock is, or how good the grass is at the other end, all of the cows hang out next to each other..."

This actually happens in real life (Next time you're driving in the country have a look) and is a common phenomenon..

Anyway, the moral of the story is that the above is true for Moreton Bay...

Paddock = Moreton Bay
Cows = Boats/Fisherman
Grass = Fishing

(I think I should lay off the booze for a while! ;D )
