Best Overseas Fishing Spot !!!

Where is the BEST place have you personally fished overseas and why??? ::)

Mine would have to be Alaska for the MONSTER salmon and abundance of trout.................the scenery's pretty good too!!! ;)

Hen and Chicken Islands off Whangarei NZ. Fishing off the yacht in 80' of water and crystal clear all the way to the bottom. No BS, use to use tiny blocks of cheese to catch good pan size squire, after you got through the blue mau mau's. Always gave the misses the tom tits when she went hunting for cheese to cook a scallop mornay on the yacht ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Other best spot was in the "Hole in the Wall" in Arnhem land, but I guess it wasn't really overseas as such, just in the Wessels in the Arafura Sea.

Great place and fantastic fishing.

My favorite for fresh is Shuswap Lake BC Canada I grew up there and where the Adams river enters the lake is a top rainbow spot, full on action when the salmon are spawning.

Cocos Keeling produced some good fish with little effort, long ways to go unless you have a sail boat as we did at the time...

Yukon Canada for northern pike and moose ;) lived with a mad trapper for 3 months when i was 11yrs and learnt so much from him.

Neither are technically overseaes, as they are both Australian territories, but I would have to say Christmas Island and the Cocos Keeling Islands, which are both way out off the coast of Western Australia in the Indian Ocean. Huge GT's from the jetty at night and giant Dogtooth Tuna from the boat in the daytime at Cocos. Big Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, monsterous GT's and Sailfish on the troll at Christmas within a stone's throw of the boat ramp. And work paid for me to go there...

bensbach.....png......but i went there prior to the mad tourist boom that it still holds today,,,,,last time i enquired you have a 45% chance of confirmation of booking 6 months in advance @ $550/day,,,,lodgings were primitive,,, but everything,,and i mean everything was laid on,,,, going by there web site little has changed including the fishing which is all c & r,,,only a certain amount of fillets are allowed out,,,,,needed 1 week additional off work just to recover from the 1 week there

Didn't get lucky on the marlin the trips I went out, but plenty of wahoo and yellow fin tuna.

i have been fortunate to fish a number of countries (all with fly).

I've fished in South Africa where I live for many fresh and saltwater species both inshore and off shore.

I've fished a number of african countries including Lesotho for the native yellow fish, Zambia and Zimbabwe for the elusive tiger fish, and I've fished Mozambique plenty - see the pics to follow.

More widely I've also done a bit of fishing in the Uk, as far soiutha s Cornwall, the lake districts in the middle, and in Scotland I chased Greyling and Salmon.

My all time favourite is by far Mozambique where I lose myself due to the wildness. Being a very recent war stricken country now suffering from poverty and rife with disease like Malaria and HIV AIDS, not many but the boldest go.

That includes me.

You can go in mid holiday season and see no one for at least 3 days.

See the pics attached of this gem of a place - the first shows a beautifulk ledge / drop off that runs for about 70km's up the coast. It's deep sea, and suddenly a pinnacle then land - this means you can push out on a yak or simpy cast and catch a saily from shore - exceptional place.

Actually it gets quite scary out there when you are casting a fly and every centimetre counts, with a rising tide I came home casting all the way through the "flats"

And lastly a true insight into Mozambique - Palm Sunday just after church - couldn't resist the photo. The road you see is a main "tarred" road and is one of the better roads. Highways etc are more typical of tarred roads, but badly potholed, and seldom repaired.

Not that I've travelled heaps, but had an unbelievable trip to Fiji last year. Stayed at a great little resort down off Cape Washington on Kadavu. Was mainly there on a surf trip as the waves are exceptional, but there is severely untapped potential on the fishing front. All they really know there is trolling for yellow fin, wahoo 'cuda etc, which is all well and good as it's as good a water for this as anywhere. But the inclose stuff around the bombies and dropoffs is virginal, untouched. Basically the surf pumped and I only went fishing a handful of times. Trolling was comparatively quiet, but we still managed some decent fin, a solid wahoo and an endless supply of mack tuna and 'cuda. Next time we went out trolling nothing was happening so I asked the driver to troll back to the resort in close to the edge. In the trolling space of no more than a kilometre we caught 3jobfish, 2 blue trevors, 1 coral trout, 1 long nosed emperor looking thing, and 2 mack tuna. I told the boat driver that he could pick a few fish to take back to the village, he chose the macks and a trevally! We were more than happy to take the others back and get the chef to cook 'em up for us. The next day, our last day there, we went for a bbq at one of the beaches that were on the stretch we trolled the previous day. These beaches are only accessible by boat as they are on the W flank of Cape Washington (for those trivia buff's amongst us, this is where they filmed the original king kong movie). After lunch I coerced the boat drver into taking me out a bit so I could try a popper cast back at the reef drop offs, in less than 10 casts I had a nice trev and a jobfish. Unfortunately the other punters wanted to get back to the resort and we had to pack and get organised to leave. So I left with just a taste of its potential. If you were to go there and concentrate on fishing alone you would have an amazing time, but their main concern is providing for the surfers. So it is a surfer/fishermans idea of heaven. And yeh, I'm definely going back.

nope, you know how it is, 90% of the time when you're out there no-one's got a camera anyway.

Generally though there's not too much I haven't seen on Ausfish that can be caught in Moz.

Both countries are in the soutern hemisphere, and in the main have much of the same fish (maybe a few species differ) Or so I sea in many ref books on worldwide distribution

From jewfish to cobia to tailor to "wolf herring??" - got those ??, to sun fish and I assume flying fish, to dorado / dolphin to sailies and marlins we are fortunate enough to have them all, and many more.

Th e reason I fish Mozambique is that few others mnake the journey, and once you are there, everything is paradise

Uepi Is in the Solomons for me. The ubundance of pelagics is huge and there are plenty of huge trout etc that hammer you when bottom bashing. You can catch or try and catch GT's off the jetty or troll for Blue,black marlin,barracuda,yellofin,Spaniards etc just 100 meters off the island. Witnessed free jumping marlin and also got spooled by one. You can also go up the creeks fishing for black spots and big jacks. Great place and recommend it.

Probably my all time favourite is Dirk Hartog Island (I know, its not really overseas, but well....) where a group of us have been going now for 7 years. It is truly awesome land based fishing. I have also been lucky enough to catch Nile Perch at Rubondo Island in Lake Victoria, Tanzania which was an unforgettable experience, fished for Nile Perch and Tilapia in Mali without much luck but a lot of good times. I caught xos sized fish called Linguado by the locals in Northern Chile which looked to me like flounder on steroids. We caught these spinning big minnow lures in the surf zone of a beach called Hornitos and its a top spot and great experience. I fished for and eventually caught Snake Head in Malaysia which although being small was a very rewarding experience after spending countless hours and trips away to bag one (I eventually caught one at a lake at work during my lunch break!!!!). I am now trying to get a trip out in the creeks of Papua (indonesian side) to hunt Barra and mangrove jacks which are plentifull here. Places on my must do list are xmas island for Wahoo and I really want to get to papua where the Black and Peacock Bass are (none here unfortunately). I am going to Rowley Shoals a the beginning of August this year which I am hoping will blow me away according to all the hype about the place.

Lake Otamangakow? a man made lake in taupo district and the only area in Taupo that you can spin fish. Little black carp imitation lures caught many a six polund rainbow in a man made hydro electricity canal. I watched a 15 year old kid catch 6 good fish up to 8 pound on fly and saw him loose a monster that would have nudged 12lbs ( straightend hook).

Bougainville Island.....
Was there for 6 Months in 1999 -2000. Wahoo, Spanish Mackeral, Dolphin Fish, Trevally, Sailfish and Yellowfin Tuna, oh yeah and plenty of sharks :o. Almost daily out and about at dawn in a locals bannana boat...... the deal local drives we provide the fuel for his motor and our game rods and lures he gets the fish...... ;D
Many many smiley returens to the harbour to start the days work at 8am!
The pic attatched was at lunchtime at Loloho! ... missed the lunch feed but hey what a way to have your break during the day
