Guys,
What's your favourite saltwater species?
Why is this species your favourite?

My favorite is flathead. Not v exciting I know although the initial take still thrills. when I first ever took up FF I went down toYamba, kayaked out to a sandbank and immediately caught over a dozen wading in the shallows. Ive been hooked ever since. They are so reliable. You can catch them just about anywhere anytime and Ifind myself having the most relaxed time chasing (chasing flathead? stalking maybe) them. Michael

Hi wes,
I would say it's between longtails and mangrove jack on fly.
They both have great fighting abilities and live in close / availability to home.Although i'm off on a barra trip in the Sandy Straits in two weeks. So many speices , so little time.

Hi Wes...Were talking about this on the boat today...
Probably Giant Herring.....
Because of the overall challenge, the take, the fight, the speed, the jumps, the knuckle dustings,...an all round fantastic fish...
Got some good ones in the surf at Dirk Hartog In W.A a few years ago but cant find the pics...bugger

I don't really have a favorite, but Tuna in general would be right up there. A few others would be Milkfish, Queenfish and Tarpon. My goal is still to land a Billfish on fly.......one day. ::)

Wes,
I have many to pick but what stands out the most is Ox eye herring or Tarpon. Tarpon are reasonably common and for its size it gives spectacular speed and acrobatics. They hit flies equally as hard as barras. They go absolutely berzerk when landed too. So guys, my favourite fish on fly is Tarpon. Dale

Hi Wes,
I'm still relatively new to this ff lark and I wish I'd discovered it 30 years earlier.
Despite the absolute thrill of landing my first longy recently (and I want to catch alot more of them too) I think that the reel smokin' first run of a good mac tuna is a real buzz. ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
Mick
PS Perhaps I oughta oil the spindle!

For me it would have to be a toss up between a longy and a tarpon (the proper one - Megalops Atlanticus). Both really go like trains [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] [smiley=2thumbsup.gif] [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Duckbill, didnt know youd gone after Giant Tarpon, There the fish i really want to go after, they seem like the ultimate SW fly fish, One yr Ill spend a few weeks in Homassasa chasing them, when i win the lotto.
Dont know if there a fave but i do love our lil poons, good on lighter gear, never caught 1 the size of Dales though. MQ

When I was working in Gabon, West Africa I went out chasing tarpon a few times. Unfortunately I didn't manage to catch one on fly for more than one reason: I only had an 8 weight with me, and the biggest I caught on conventional tackle was estimated between 100/110kg!!! Would have been fun on an 8 weight. The water there is very murky, but there were lots of lagoons apparently teeming with baby tarpon, but I didn't have any way of getting to the lagoons (1 hour drive through forest and sand dunes) and onto the lagoons... Will always regret not having had more time there :'( :'( :'(

I love wading in gin clear water and sight fish. It's the closest thing I've found in Australia to compare with Christmas Island(Kiribati) Bonefish. It's a shame we haven't got any bonefish flats in Australia to compare to the huge expanses of CI.

I envy you blokes for some of those pics. I wish I were your travel agent.
Wes - I can't go past longtails. They look good, eat flies, fight hard and, as Steve said, you can get at them fairly easily. Heres a pic of a fish I caught about a 1/2 hour from my local boat ramp one afternoon after work in a 15 foot tinny on a trip that cost me about $5 in fuel.

I've had limited fishing but am a definite fishing slut. - I'll throw a fly or lure at anything with fins. I'm the same as Flytime - LT's and then Jacks, only because the blinkers have been on only for for LT's the last few summers. Those longies are just awesome on their runs and when you can see the fish eat your fly it's like everyone has kicked a goal. ;D
Hanging out for the new Fisher - look out then be able to get some more of that salt water back in my veins to wash out the dust from the west.

Great thread with some excellent pics.
Even though it might not count because it is a Yank vote (although I have caught a few on fish on the fly in Oz) my hands down vote is for a big Tarpon on the flats (over 100 pounds). They are as tough as they come, really challenging to stay connected for the whole fight, jump like mad, and are in less than a meter of water.
Sight fishing in very shallow water is I think the pinnacle of saltwater fly fishing.
I sure do like your Barras too though!
Cheers,
Brian H.

Brain,
Catching a Tarpon over 100 is something I aspire to.
3kg / 6.6lb pulls our Tarpon up over here but still great fun. I have seen a video of your Tarpon and they do the same thing as our ie Jump, pull hard and daisy chain but just don't get to the size of yours

Brian,
Welcome.
Have you got any images of the "Silver Kings"?
How about the snook? They are a bit like our barra.
Big Tarpon is definately on my "To-Do" list. Big fish in shallow water, that jump.
I love fishing in shallow clear water where you can see the fish and present the fly. Golden Trevally do that for me. If only they jumped.

I have been very lucky to work in an industry which I love and has helped me further my fishing for over 20 years.I was actually interested to know how many species I've caught on fly alone - so sat down and started working it out at 136 different critters :o

Sorry I don't have any digital pics, all mine are slides. I did just get back last week from the Keys and caught a Slam in under 3 hours! I was thrilled. Small tarpon (8 pounds) caught on a Merkin, 9 pound Bone (my biggest yet!), and my first Permit ever (baby)!! My guide Dave Dekert said he has been guiding in Islamorada for 10 years and I was the first person to get a fly only Slam on his boat. I got pretty lucky.

The Permit, or Snub-nosed-oyster-cracking-permit-dart has my vote.

Andy,
Thanks for that ;D.
The Snubbie have a great reputation for been very hard to catch. Us flyfisherman are so perverse, we enjoy the challenge. If we want it to be easy we wouldn't use the fly rod would we.
I'm planning to spend some time and resources next year on them . I've got both Aussie Tarpon and bonefish. I need to complete the set ;D
The Queenies on the other hand are suicidal. Great flyfishing species. Take just about any fly especially poppers, and jump. Big Queenies are rare though.

Guys,
Queenies are made for the flyrod.
I caught mine in Hervey Bay. I didn't know there were big Queenies up there. I nail that one in front of a family having a picnic and a little paddle. Almost ran over it. Backed the boat back and dropped the clouser in front of it. The leader was barely out of the top guide. A few jump and quickly boated for a few pics. I had to jump into the water to revive it. Queenies sometimes don't revive too well.
Read a report in this issue of "Fishing World" about 12kg(that's a whopper, did they mean 12lb) Queenie that was caught off the Kingfisher Bay(Fraser Island) jetty which caused ciguatera poisoning. Serves them right for eating such a beautiful fish.
Wes
P.S. Scotto you're getting better with Photoshop. It's amazing how you can make a small fish look so large ;D. You must be getting tired of colour of the reel Katrina using, last years colours :-[. I'll take it off your hands and you can move onto the new seasons colour. ;)
P.P.S You need to flip both images too. It looks like the reels are left-hand wind.

Also caught sight casting off the rocks as the salmon smashed into little baitfish schools :).

I hope y'all don't mind another yank vote, if I was limited to only one type of fish for the rest of my days and didn't need it for food it would have to be Mr. BONEFISH, I can't think of anything better than stalking a flat and hunting the

Nice fish guys!
In the words of the singing bearded burbler "you gotta know when to hold em know when to fold em" I am folding guys..you and Noddy are playing with stacked decks. I'm a newbie to this fly stuff and Blue Marlin on fly are pretty common these days anyhow, so take me chips before you throw that Triple Tail down!! Might have been the first Aussie with a Atlantic Permy on fly? but you got the Indo Pacific combo first so that hands stuffed..(BTW you and any aussie with a permit on fly should join http://www.dopap.com/ just for laughs.
Anyway you guys WIN . So I am gunna scale down from the big salty stuff and will stick to small "man size" trout in ankle deep water on ultra tiny dries for a whilehttp://www.############.com/myegallery.php?&do=showpic&pid=593&orderby=dateD and of course chasing the steelheads like this little fella my mate caught this morning http://www.############.com/myegallery.php?&do=showpic&pid=587&orderby=dateD . However to save a bit of face, last month I managed to catch Sailfish,Yellowfin Tuna, Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Coho and my new saltwater favorite http://www.############.com/gallery/gallery/flyfish/saltwater/neahbay/rockonfly.jpg on fly and it will suffice until I get back for a dose of OZ!

Great fish Max - I used a lot of what you did in those early days as my inspiration towards LBG and then saltwater flyfishing myself [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Might have been the first Aussie with a Atlantic Permy on fly? but you got the Indo Pacific combo first so that hands stuffed 8)
Anyway you guys WIN ;D
All the best and in the spirit of fun
Randall ;D

>:( Ya just could not help yourself hey :( had to go that one step further and post the Triple Tail...Well its getting ridiculous with all the old photos being posted time and time again. Your tarpon and Wes's "I know what you did last summer" Golden Trev shot etc etc
You dont see me doing that ;) BUT
one thing that sets my photos apart from the rest of the jumble sale here is the bloody ridgey didge QUEENSLANDER holding the fish up!!! ;D

Running out of chips - Scotto
