Hey mate,

Haven't fished to much for spotties, but have fished for alot of pelagics within NSW. I would definately use a wire trace, because of there sharp teeth.

I bought and used a three inch long tr4ack designed for fly fishing. It doesn't have a clip for the fly, but you (how do I explain it) uncurl/unwrap/unwip the wire and tread on the fly and then re-wrap the wire. The wire has a loop on the ends for the fly and also to attach the mono/leader.

I can't give much more info than that, apart from 'Hang On!!!'

I don't use wire, In beleve it puts the fish of the bite.I tie the fly back on the hook, so there is some thing between the teeth and my line, and/or tie them in tandem with single strand wire between the hooks.
(did I say I didn't use wire?) I also use a heavy tippet of penn 10x leader. But I still donate my share of flys
to the toothy criters, but I tie them so it dosn't heart to much.
If spotties cut you off, try and increase the retreive speed, sometimes, this makes them, the bitie boys, nip the back of the fly, and not bite over the whole fly and leader....sometimes.

Wire, I have used a number of different types, results, less strikes.

I dont like wire eather, MASON holds the fish well, just replace the shock tippet every so often.Ive only caught Spotties this yr, never seen them before in numbers, great fish for sight casting, weve been finding them following schools of mac Tuna. quinny
